Yes,is great!
After all, this hobby wouldn't be that expensive if the prices wouldn't be artificially pumped up.
By the way,the lfs bond fast putty hardens U/W within 24 hrs(for best results) ,not 30 min as they say.

I can only tell one trick that comes to my mind:
- don't buy Marc Weiss products!
... that red powder,Spectra Vital ...
One other thing:
- I print out the good ideas and keep them in a booklet.
Take care guys!

i have something that's a little strange...

if you're looking to add more aeration or skimming power, stick a limewood airstone up the pipe that drains water to the sump,as long as the pipe is under water. Great way to take advantage of the strong water flow entering the sump. When i did this, I got a solid 18 inch column of microbubbles, and a 6 by 6 by 3 layer of dry foam. kinda like a mini downdraft.

I dealt with a lot of problems with bubbles entering my U-tube and breaking the siphon till someone told me if the water flowed faster, it would shoot bubbles right out on its own - a smaller diameter U-tube solved the problem.

mini refugium:
place a short length of PVC pipe (about 6 inches) on the sandbed behind the rocks to hide it. the idea is to create an area of low flow. in time, the pipe wiil be crawling with copepods inside.

fish however will swim through, so make sure the diameter of the pipe is small. or block the ends with live rock. you can also use a large pipe with a smaller pipe inside.

Broccoli Floretts for Tangs and Angels: Boil a small cup of water in microwave. Take water out and stick the florette end of the broccolli into the water for about 15 seconds to blanche the florret. Put florrete into water on a clip or tie to a small rock with rubber band. Tangs and Angels will clean it up.

Tip on getting wife to like aquarium: Buy her things like a dress every now and again on days that are other than Christmas or Birthdays.

You can attach an air line to the venturi input of a powerhead and feed the other end of the air hose to the crest of the U-Tube to eliminate siphon problems. The venturi input will pull all the air out when the powerhead comes on.

I have to write myself a note that says WATER IS ON, and lay it on my bed or on my keyboard so I don't overflow (again)...

I have done this with the RO, the ponds, the pool. Ok maybe the sink once doing dishes too. I call it multi-tasking. It usually ends up in mopping...

I've heard any heat to the broccoli can destroy some of the vitamins in them. I used to freeze it and then put it in the tank - that softened it up enough. See:

BTW - broccoli can cure hlle. That's why I was feeding it to my tang.

resized your pic to 800 pixels wide for better display, and saved it locally. -Chucker

If you live in the Seattle area you can go down to the Seattle Aquarium and get processed salt water for $0.05 a gallon (its the stuff they use in their tanks, which are pretty nice). Its all I've used and my tank is doing fine. I have not bought a bag of salt yet.

I'm sure that other areas have similar places to get water. Look into it!

hi.
I heard that San Diego's Scripp Aquarium give away its salt water for FREE. Well, the water is actually from the water change, but good as new.

Okay, thought of one. If you have cyanobacteria, after taking the recommended preventative steps and siphoning off as much as you can, 250mg of erythromycin per 25 gallons of tank water, 2 treatments, 2 days apart, will cure your tank. No adverse affects on any sps, clams, lps, softies, fish, inverts, etc. that I have noticed in any treatments. And, the cheap way to do it is if you know a doctor (I use my dad), get a prescription if you have a prescription plan and save big money (it's just like Menards!). Can't beat $5 for enough erythromycin to treat over 600 gallons of saltwater several times over!

Here are several tricks i've picked up that haven't been mentioned.

1. If you ever wanna do some cleaning in the tank such as siphoning flatworms, or deitritus, without having to do a water change just take a 3/8" or 1/4" tubing and place a fine micron bag over one end of it and fasten it using a rubberband. Then place that end with the bag on it in the sump. Start your siphon as mentioned earlier in this thread and vacuum away. The water will be recycled back into the sump, but the micron bag will filter any particulates before they get back into the water column.

2. To remove that annoying coralline off of equipment, etc. take some white distilled vinegar and stick it into the microwave to get it nice and hot. Then placed your coralline covered equipment, i.e. powerhead screens, powerheads, etc. into the vinegar and watch it fizz and dissolve in no time!

3. To store your Golden Pearls powder foods, put em in one of those completely sealable salt/pepper shakers. Keep em sealed and refrigerated to get maximum life out of those GP's since we all know we get a lifetime supply. I was thinking of doing this, but have yet to get out and buy it.

I love that idea! I have been wondering how to clean my cichlid tank without doing a water change so often! Why didn't I think of that?!

Acclimating new specimens. Dump the fish/inverts/etc and water in a large tupperware container. Then tie a knot in some airline tubing and create a syphon to drip acclimate your new specimens. By tightening or loosening the knot, you can control the drip rate. Makes it a lot easier to do hour plus acclimations for snail and starfish. Just don't forget to check up on it.

Will aquamend attach liverock to glass if the rock is cut in half so it has flat surfaces?

Been thinking about making a smaller tank with back and sides covered with LR in this manner.

1. I drop my powerhead impellers in a glass of vinegar overnight every other month or if they seize--dissolves all the salts that build up on them.

2. You can use a magnifying glass directly in front of your camera to get better macro photos.

3. magnets are nice for getting dropped items out of rockworks.

4. If you place your container in the bathtub or shower while filling with RO, floods ain't that big of a deal.
