I was moving some rock from my 75 to my new 180 and when I picked up one of the pieces I felt a sting, well 24 hours later my finger looks purple and as big as a golf ball and the joints hurt.It doesn't appear to be a bristle worm sting, I just dont know what did it. but my finger feel like it has been run over by a truck.

I have no idea, but you need to see a doctor! Stings from a reef can be very dangerous. It has to do with the toxins in the animals bodies. Palythoa can be a killer

On the short side, take some benedryl today, and see a MD tomorrow. If you have ANY DIFFICULTY BREATHING, GO TO THE EMERGENCY ROOM RIGHT THEN!

Definitely see a doctor. Even if it isn't some kind of poisonous sting, it certainly sounds infected. Yuck! Call the doc first thing in the morning!

You may have to insist and push and they may have to go and sit and look through their books, but they certainly know more than us.

Definitely see a doctor first thing tomorrow. I would call my doctor's after hours desk, and have him call you back. He may send you to the Emergency Room.

BTW- Got a pic of your hand?

Those pictures do look ugly, I will see how it looks in the morning, I finally got some benedryl and put an Ice pack on it, seems to be helping with the swelling. Does anyone have any idea what kind of animal could deliver such a sting.I cant see any sign of a sting, but something let me have it.

Thanks again for the replys

Well as an EMT I would make you see a doctor or sign a waver. The Benedryl is a very good idea. You need to watch for signs of anaphalactic shock. It is the same thing that happens to some people that get stung by bees and have a reaction. If you start feeling crappy or you start to see a lot of swelling, especially in say, the neck area, you need to haul booty. If you start to swell upstairs it doesn't take long to lose an airway. Remember if you are taking the Benedryl you might just be holding it back so keep track of your meds and sweilling. If you go to sleep and start to swell your wife gets to go through hell...

I'd just go see the doc

What makes you even think it was a sting? I'm wiling to bet it was one of those nasty little tubes that poked you and you got an infection. I grabbed hold of a rock once and one of those broke off in my finger. It stuck out about a quarter inch and blood poured out of it like a straw. Bled for a long time too. Was disgusting. Probably very lucky I didn't get what I will now dub dmm disease.

I will watch my finger closely if it doesnt look better soon I will have the Doc take a look to see if I have what Tangirl calls dmm disease.

Ernie,
when I click your link, a pic of Brad Pitt shows up. If Pitt ever grows out of my hand, I will have to do some home amputation.

Ok,

Did what Harrison said, and I found a big green metallic looking crab with red eyes, could this have done it.
