People seem to think that controlling salinity is the reason why saltwater tanks are hard to keep.

Maybe they don't know that salt doesn't evaporate...

"So you have to add salt every week, right?"

Duhhhh....

Top questions for me are:

Isn't it hard to maintain the salinity?

That 150 gallon reef tank costs how much???

At least I am in Miami, where most people know the difference between SW and FW.

So you think getting a shipment of LR raises some eyebrows? I ordered a shipment of Tang Heaven from IPSF and had it delivered to my work place. "You mean you ordered this seaweed stuff Fedexed from Hawaii? For how much?"

I was looking around at my LFS yesterday and this woman and her small son were looking at the saltwater fish. She goes, "We want one that we can put in a bowl." I explained that saltwater fish cannot be kept in bowls. She then asked what can be, and I replied a betta. Luckily she took my advice!

The starfish/Octopus saga is a classic, I get that one on a daily basis.

"Wow, cool an octopus."
"Thats a starfish, not an octopus"
"No way really? it looks like an octopus"
"Not really, how many legs does it have?"
counting....
"Five"
"And Octo means what?"
"uhhhh eight?"
"Correctamundo"

most recent personal fav

"Did you collect all of this yourself?"

My Aunt is slowly going blind and had her licence revoked nearly 7 years ago, do you really want to hear some of the questions she has asked??? (Though she still can see the movement and colours so she can spend alot of time just looking

"Where do you buy all those plants?"

"Wow! An oyster! I didn't know they were blue!"

Everyone's favorite is the snail on the glass, or the big aiptasia. Sheesh.

I do think it's very funny that after you've just pointed out and explained your favorite parts of the tank- clownfish & host, coral REEF, etc, you then hear, "Is that saltwater?"

I think I knew about clownfish & anemones when I was 2, can you believe how many people have never heard of it, much less what an anemone looks like?

I was in an LFS and a guy who keeps a SW FO tank steps up next to me as I was looking in the coral tanks and says, "Are those plants hard to keep?"

I thought he was joking as I just overheard him talking to the LFS guy about all of his SW fish, but by the look on his face I couldn't tell. So I pointed to some macroalgae in the tank and said, "Do you mean this stuff?"

"No, the big orange one there," he said, pointing to an Open Brain.

"Um, no that's a coral. It's an animal."

"Really?"

"Yup."

"Cool."

The one comment I get from most of my friends is "I can get 2 shrimp dinners for $30." Then they comment on how beautiful the blood shrimp are.

When I first set up my 90 reef tank, my roomates asked if it would be cool if they went to the supermarket to buy a bunch of small Maine lobsters so we could raise them up and then eat em.

My favorite (besides the lady who wanted 100 damsels to put in little bowls as centerpieces for her daughters wedding) is how no matter what fish you have in stock almost all of the customers spend more time staring into the brine shrimp tank than anything else.

This thread rules! Ha ha ha hahhhh!!!

"Why did you put those little straws in your tank?" (re: little feathers)

"That plant looked really cool a few minutes ago- all smooth and shiny. Now that plant is all bushy! What happened?"

the best (or worst) depending on how you look at it, was when i used to work at an lfs (very poorly run, so i left, could make any changes) was one of the EMPLOYEES in the FISH DEPARTMENT said (and i quote): "Oh no, that anenome is eating the clown!".....i tell you, some of the people they hire.....
