I was wondering how many of you out there would be interested in buying COLD WATER (salt of course) reef critters.
Octopus, anenomes, crabs, prawns, fish, eels, cold water algea, etc.etc.
There is something in the works and would like to know what kind of response I might get.
Info
animals require no special lighting
do require chiller
no need for ro/di
water doesn't require intense scrutiny(sp?)
no finicky eaters, some do have specific diets though

I have a full reef tank and thought that this would be an awsome contrast to warm water tanks
for all you multi-tankers out there.

let me know if you would be interested in buying from us/ideas or questions. We can sell to the public but it will take a little time to prepare for that undertaking.

As of right now, I'd have to say no. I simply don't have the room for any more tanks than I already have (plus the 2 that will be set up after we move). In the future? Who knows?

I would LOVE to set up a cold water display, similar to our B.C. coastline. I'm a member of the Vancouver aquarium, and LOVE going there and looking at the displays, which are always teeming with life. I can usually get a behind the scenes tour, and envy the simplicity. (basic lighting, basic filtration, heavy feeding, ect.)
I've never really looked into the costs of setting a system like that up, or availability of animals, plus the fact that I live in Canada may be what makes my response to your post a moot point.
BUT, I think it's a great idea - our cold water fisheries supply (or supplied, anyways) a HUGE amount of food for us consumers, and it would be great to learn more about how it all works, and of course where it went wrong, resulting in the virtual shutdown of the commercial fisheries.
I lived on a boat for a year on Vancouver Island, and the ocean certainly has a special energy about it!
I hope to see more responses to your post.

Good luck!

Not at this time. I just dove in Carmel and there is so much life in the cold! I just have no more room.

Seems that most of the cool water stuff would be too cryptic wouldn't it?

Cold water is great. Take a small chiller, a 10 or 20 gallon tank, and you can have a display both more colorful then even a reef tank and easier to care for.

stable cold water tank = larger tank = more lights = bigger chiller = no hot summer = no mild winter = I will never be able to put in my home in southern california.

Nope!

By the way, Charles, you live in LA right? Have you ever been to the Chinese supermarket where their 200G livestock holding tank? To keep the water at bay, They have to pump the aircon on to 62F, plus a Big-ass chiller running back there to keep the water down. The livestock tank holds all coldwater species. The tank is ugly by the way as you can see it sweat like crazy.

The cold water critter are interesting, indead, but,if your house temp does not reach above 75, fine. But most are not the case!

couldn't afford the utility bills of the chiller, i barely can afford the utility bills with my pumps and mh. Sounds more costly as mh are only on 12hr not running 24/7 as the chiller would have to run so not for me now. However if i was independently wealthy i would own one, or two....or maby a island with a cold water reef, yea thats better.

Eh, maybe if i've done everything there is to do with warm water marine life then maybe (once i saved up for a chiller) i would do it.

Anyways, i like sticking my arm in a nice warm tank, don't really want to get pnemmonia (sp?) from re-arranging the rock...
