Hi everyone. I discovered this site about a week ago. I have learned a lot of stuff already and will probably learn alot more. Thank you all for that. I do have a question though. Who is Mark Weiss? I noticed that a lot of people have made fun of him and just wanted to be in on the joke. I have seen his products in pet wharehouse but do not know anything about his credentials, who is this guy anyway?

Mark has done more to further this hobby than almost anyone on this board ever will. The problem is he has used his name and company to promote products that are less than effective.

I wonder what Mark w has done to further this hobby other than to make$$. Not that making $$ is bad but most of the stuff he markets is not needed IMO/IME But thats business i just wonder how he's helped the hobby. At least Sprung has wrote helpful books. I know mark has just started those small books by Shimek But what else???

In his latest issue of WaterMark (basically a 4 page ad in FAMA) he "interviews" a couple of guys who rave on and on about his products. making statements like "you could keep corals in the dark as long as you follow our directions" and "we usually reccomend dosing three to four times the reccomendation on the bottle" and "by using Marc Weiss products like we do you will never have ich in your tank ever again." It's basically junk that is peddled to the uninformed buyer/newbie that is looking for a magic potion for a successful reef tank. I used his products for a while to determine if I wanted to carry them in my store. My basic conclusion was, it didn't hurt the tank or help it. There was no diiference before or after. Basically just fancy packaging.

I have been keeping Freshwater tanks for quite some time and this is the side of the house Marc Weiss as a writer has advanced the hobby in many aspects.

Most noteably breeding. I house three types of Cichlids. Marc Weiss writings on husbandry and breeding have allowed the keeping of Cichlids to become a Aquacultered driven hobby performed by hobbiests so that wild populations are not put under such extreem pressure.

Has this helped the saltwater side, absolutely. It was not to long ago that cichlid breeding was not easily done by hobbiests, through great information gained from people like Marc Weiss it is now routine. Much of what was learned about what triggers breeding and how to duplicate it in a tank Has allowed people trying to breed Saltwater speicies a road map o discovery.

Do I use Marc Weiss products, no

Do I think because he endorses products that are not the best to take away from all that he has given to advance the hobby, no.

Here is a link to an article written by Marc Weiss on how to breed Discus originaly writen in 1990. A time when Hobbiests where trying to learn how to breed these fish.

www.petsforum.com/cichlidroom/articles/a015.html

You may even notice he talks of using earthworms for feeding instead of plugging a product, for those thinking, bt this was published before he made it big with his line of products, think again. he allowed it to be re-published in 1996.

Again I am in no way endorsing his products. I am saying he has givin a lot to the hobby of Aquaria.

Come on now. Anyone who's ever kept cichlids (especially African) knows that if you have a male and female in the tank, they will breed. Very much like rabbits or mice.

Thank God for Marc Weiss!

If you are just getting started I can suggest the local club. The site is www.masm.org We meet in Troy every month with a speaker or for trading and just talking. I would defenatly check it out. I also work at a LFS. Pet Connection on 5 mile and Middlebelt in Livonia.

As for Mark Weiss. My personal opinion is I think he is another Jullian Sprung that is to caught up in himself.

People have been breeding Discus since at least the 70s. The problem wasn't getting these fish to breed but the discovery that you could not seperate the young from the parent because they needed to feed on the slime coat. As far as breeding most of the other Cichlids I have read books from the 60s that explain how to breed the different species, I know I was breeding SA cichlids in the early 70s.

Taken from WaterMarc issue 12 in the december issue of FAMA.

"actually with experience you can keep corals in a bucket on a sunny porch."

"a fed coral in the dark will live a lot longer than a starved one in good lighting."

on cycling a tank...

"Start with the most delicate fish you want to end up with! The purple tangs, the hippos, and the powder blues, the angels. All the ick magnets. A couple at a time allowing the nitrifiers in the rock to rise to the occasion."

The ick think makes sense. YOu do not want to introuduce ick once you already have a tank full of fish.

It makes sense in theory but in reality the stress a fish undergoes during the start up of a new tank (even after it is cycled) seems to me would have starting the tank off with a breakout of ich.

People may have been writing back in the 70's but did you even read the article it is a great article.

I guess all the people who are dogging this person would not mind listing their contributions to the hobbies and the literature they have written?

My only contributions the the hobby are what I post on this and other boards. I try to make sure that I know what I am saying, even if I do not have personal experience in the subject. I accept correction when I am wrong and do not try to lead people in the wrong direction. I do not make money off of my advice and I would never say that any product can cure everything; even if it was my product.

I have not read those articles by Marc Weiss. However, I have so little opinion of his credibility that I would not want to waste my time.

I posted my feelings about his products here. I am the 10th post down. I will not repeat them here.

To be honest I was really big into SA and African cichlids before I got into reefing and I had never heard of him until I got into reefing. But I'll give you the benefit of the doubt. Marc Weiss continues to come acroos to me as a worn out celebrity on a late night infomercial. At one time they were great and popular and they use that charisma to peddle crap to suckers. Any contributions he may have made to the hobby is completely negated by his abuse of his name to peddle "magical reefing bullets" to people. His continued promition of the "it's easy if you do it my way" ideology does more harm than good. (IMO

) He's a used car saleman peddling used junk to little old ladies (IMO

I haven't furthered the hobby but neither has Mark weiss. He's made $$ which makes him a better business man but not an asset to the hobby there a difference. So many ppl who have been in the marine hobby know this. Look at what he writes cycles with tangs ect.... ppl on the bboard recommend cycling with LR or raw shimp. that in itself has saved marine life= MW is recommending sure death of marine life which is bad for the hobby
