This is one post that has me going "Fer Christs sakes"...
The impellor is NOT exposed. When on, NOTHING can enter into the stream, not even a suicidal goby.
That said, IF one was hyper-worried, a very, very simple solution comes to mind. Think of a tennis racket. See all those strings? Do the same thing. Drill some small holes (1/16th inch bit), then string some fishing line, maybe 1-2 lb test, through the holes. Make a pattern so thing can gain entry. The fishing line is thin enough not to slow down the water very much, and strong enough to repel any gobies/blennies with suicidal tendencies.
Such a simple solution to all your carping, with not one of the 'problems' inherent. Elegant, huh?
