i haven't got the time to try to track the article, is it in this month's edition? also, i have NO idea what the average lifespan of a flamer is in the wild, so have now way to guage someone else's success.

i say, if you've done what the experts say you ought not to be able to, then document EVERYTHING. this not only helps with the issue of veracity, it helps with captive study (since folks seem to insist on keeping 'em).

in the meantime, i am still with the general consensus - flamers just have an abysmal record in home aquaria, and for the most part, i don't recommend them.

I have had my flame scallop for almost a year now and it is thriving. I got it as a freebie from Aquacon they sometimes give U something free when you order from them. Well they say it is diffiuclt to keep . But mine does fine. Once and a while i drop some live brine shrimp hatchings in the tank and some phyto plankton by kent. But all in all if i keep the tank healthy he takes care of himself. He does move from time to time. sometimes i drop some frozen minced shrimp cubes in the tank once the power head grinds it up and spits it out everyone in the tank comes alive to feed. Keep your water quality high. Dont distube it too much and it will do fine. Just dont move it once it settles in. Scallops place themselves in the tank based on avail, food, water flow and possible threats. Not on what is pleasing to the owners eye.

Apophis924 I hope your Flame continues to do well in the aquarium. But just so people know it will take a flame about 6 months to die of starvation. And what are your experiences with aquacon? I have thought about using them before.

Reefann: The Flame is doing good. In fact he is my indicator species. If his health fades then i know time to do some checking on the tank. Since he is the most sensitive of my tank mates and the most demanding. I just got lucky i think. "knock on wood" As far as Aquacon goes. I wouldnt buy from them again. I was new to the hoppy and got caught up in the advertising. Infact the only thing that lived from them was the damn flame scallop My other softies and anenome died. And you know since our tanks are in such balance something free may be that one animal to push the tank past its limits. Not to mention they say "free surprise with every order" You may get a life form you are not ready or willing to care for or may not be compatable to ones skill level or tank enviroment. Ther eare much more repeutable dealers out there. Marine depot, Dr foster smith of petwearhouse. And preuium aquatics to name my favoites.

Hey Matt : thanks for the article. If i had read that before hand i would never have gotten a flame scallop. But in my case it was a freebie from aquacon and i didn't even know they were sending it. That alone might say something about if you want to do business with a company that would ship such an animal to a customer without knowing his/her level of reef keeping or even what type of tank set up they have. I am not going to be getting anymore flame scallops and i will keep a closer eye on mine . I do have gruops of peppermenit shimp who constantly spawn. Hopefully along with what i provide and other tank life, My luck will hold out. over one year with the scallop so far X-ing fingers.

Got the same problem we do then. We have an actual drought in MN right now, kinda funny after having the 2nd wettest summer on record (only 2 weekends without rain the whole summer, of course this happens right after I buy a boat  ). Well, at least the ground doesn't move here (I know, I'm reaching).

Sorry, I missed all those replies... I was busy having a drink of my favorite beverage, talking about how cold it has been. Also, just put together a football pool for Sunday. Anybody in? $5.00 per square.

...they will eat shrimp & krill. They even eat whole pieces.

Folks, PLEASE read the article! http://www.advancedaquarist.com/issues/july2002/toonen.htm.

Just because a Lima sp. intakes something does not mean it is being ingested.

This is an excellent post (and excellent article by Dr. Toonen), and those who believe they are successful because they are feeding brine shrimp nauplii and any filter feeder foods should take a moment to read it. I do not see how they could even eat whole shrimp (based on the anatomy); but the article clearly shows the research to show that they may not even be digesting what they 'eat.' But why would a filter feeder be adapted in any way to filter something out of the water that is too large to float? Their food preference is for particles on the micron level, thousands of times smaller than a piece of shrimp.

Surely those of you who think it is fine to keep something even if it only lives a few months will want to at least try to have a chance to further our understanding of said animals. Take a moment to learn about what sort of foods it may and may not eat (and actually survive).

But I would seriously demand my money back from any company that sent these as part of a clean up crew.
