My computor is a new Sony VIAO( P4-16 MGZ) with all of the bell and whistles, maybe 6 months old. I just unplugged it, and plugged it back in to simulate a power outage. Sure enough, it does not restart. I don't believe that any of the newer machines would turn back on automatically. My last maching did not restart after a power outhage (P3, 400MGZ).
Back in the old day, computors had two position switches, and would return to whatever state they were previously in, in the event of a power outage. Now they have momentary contact switches, and don't turn back on. The benefit to this would be like during a bad lightning storm, when the power is flickering, the computor would stay off, as opposed to turning on and off with no regard as to boot status. That was a mouthful!
Any way to overcome this obstacle....short of buy a UPS with capacity to last long enough to negate the threat?
Thanks for all of your replies. This has been a most informative thread!
