Yellow Tang?

Is it ok to buy a baby yellow tang for a 37 gallon tank. And trade it in for another baby tang when the first one out grows the tank. Or is that unethical? And if it is ok to do this at what size to I let the fish get before trade in?

Be careful the tang police will get you. 8O Most will say its not enough room for a tang, some will say it is ok. they need room to swim, if your just getting one he will probable be ok, ive seen them in small tanks quite often and they seem to do fine. Another choice of fish would be best for a small tank though.

i would call that unethical, but that is just me. i have a feeling if you are asking this question it is because you already know the right answer you're just hoping someone will say no, it's fine i think you should do it. someone may, just not me. do the right thing eh, setup a 2000 gallon tank :roll:

Well, its really unethical to have any reef animal in our tanks 8O , our tanks are nothing compared to the ocean.

The answer is clearly no for two reasons.
1. Your tank is far too small for a tang.
2. If you were to get it you would get too attached to it. It would than be very difficult to let him go. Nobody will disagree with this who has every kept tangs.
Choose something suitable for a tank your size and when you move up to a 100 gallon get the tang you want.

The reason most advise against this is for one, are you positive you LFS will be around a year from and be willing take it back? Another is are you sure you would want to part with an animal you have kept for a year?

monkeyboy, My tank is not to small for a 2" tang. A 6" and up maybe I dont know thats what I am asking. Just in case you did not get it the first time.

Are you willing to rip your tank apart in a year to catch the tang? FWIW I had a yellow in my 38 gal for about a year(newbie mistake). It jumped out of the back, about a 2" wide space running the length of the tank.

-IMO it is because Madmax is simply looking for that one or two people who will agree with him. He is well aware of the feelings of the majority of the reefers on this board as it pertains to tangs in a 37 gallon tank. Instead of waiting till he/she has the right environement for a fish, they will try and mold the animal to the environement they have, regardless of the outcome.

I think a lot of you are misunderstanging my question. Sorry for that.

What I want to know is keeping a small tang for a short time harm the fish. yes or no. I dont care about becoming to attached to the fish. That wont happen. So if keeping the fish will hurt it I won't get it. But that is my question.

Most feel that if you can't provide a long term home for the fish, don't buy it. You can't predict the future, so don't plan on it. Many have bought fish with the intentions of upgrading their tanks, only to find those plan didn't work out.

Maybe you shouldn't be keeping livestocks. A owner of any live animal not caring about them, shouldn't be having them.

I am pretty sure you folks knows well what would happen to the dogs when their owner doesn't give a crap about them.

That is a strange response 8O 8O ......Maybe you should think about a turtle, that would fit nicely into a 37gal.
