Evening folks, went downstairs to turn off all lights not on a timer and I got shocked when I put my hands in the water to upright a gorg which was blown over. I get shocked (been done too many times to count, but this one was def up there with some of the most uncomfortable ones) and the gfcis do not trip.

Naturally I put my hand back in the water to make sure I was not imagining it. I get shocked again. So now I get my little tester and check the water and I get readings anywhere from nothing to spiking to 40 volts sometimes but most times staying around 20. So now I go to each gfci and trip it and test, each time I still get a reading. So now I turn them all off at one time so, as far as I thought, there should be no power going to my tanks and I test and still get a bouncing reading now from zero to 20. Since the stereo is on in the garage (on a seperate line already exsisting in the house, not connected anyway to my tanks) everytime it gets up to round 20 or so I hear interference on the radio.

Anyone have any clues?

OK found it. I have a personal 180 way up in the house which I plumbed into my system in the garage. Of course, a rio which was not on a GFCI (I installed 32 outlets in the garage for the tanks all gfci protected) in my livingroom, it was what was shocking me. Who'd of thunk it?

If my wife had not come downstairs cause she wasn't feeling well I would not have even looked over at that tank and the thought would never have occured to me.

Oh well.

Dude, dump the Rio. When I got stray voltage in my tank, the first thing I check is the powerheads. Back when I still has some Rios, It was always one of the Rios. I dumped all my rio pumps one day and replaced them with maxijets and mags.

I had a RIO zap my ass. I can't wait for some class action lawsuit to start up. Someone is gonna die before something happens. Never again to RIO's.

I think you better get a grounding probe in your tank, before you get a real serious FULL voltage shock. 8O 8O 8O

I know all about the rios, but unfortunately because of their cost effectiveness, I'll still use them. I have many rios in the shop as well as maxi jets and I have been shocked by both. In fact 3 different maxi's in one week once. I'd need ten or more maxi jets in one live rock tub alone before I even got close to the flow that I was getting from two large rios. As far as a grounding probe, the aquanetics fireplug hooked up to the system is supposed to have on in it.

If you take how many times I have had trouble with both rios and maxi's compared to the number of each I have, you'll see that in my experience the maxis give me a much higher instance of shock.

At any rate problem solved.
