Any possibility of getting Joe's Juice tested? Everyone wants to know what's in this stuff and what makes it work.

A simple analysis will tell us the elemental composition, but not the compounds that were present.

We have talked to Joe Gatto, the owner, and expressed some concern that he does not list ingredients of the product. He contends that the ingredients are secret in order to preserve his market position. We asked about the "patent applied for" label on the box and we pointed out that any patent would have to disclose the ingredients (patents and trade secrets are opposites - you can't have both).

He contends that a patent has been applied for, but we have been unable to find any record of it in the US Patent and Trademark database. He later told us that he could not give us the patent application number on the advice of his attorney and became very paranoid that we were trying to steal his product. This is a strange claim, since patent applications and numbers are public knowledge - you can read them at http://www.uspto.gov

We attempted to assure him that we had no intention of reproducing the product, but that we could not sell it without knowing what was in it. He didn't want to talk to us anymore after that.

There has been some anecdotal evidence that Joe's Juice may be harmful to shrimp, but we don't have enough info to look into it any further.

If he does get a patent, we will all be able to read it on the web, but we are a bit suspicious since we can find no record of the application.

Thanks for the reply.

I'd still like to see a chemical composition. I have no intent of reproducing it either, but I want to know what I'm putting in my tank.

FWIW, I remember a few people on here having great results with it, but as Matt said some issues with ornamental shrimps and such things

I got some to try from a local reefer.
My observation is that it looks, stains, acts and dries a whole lot like Kalk.

I'd dare guess its kalk or another hydroxylated base but mixed with something that incites a feeding response like selco(n).

If you are desperate to kill aips, you could try mixing up some kalk paste and selco and see what happens...

I have been using Kalk paste, but recently tried the JJ - they seem to work the same for me.

Interesting. Is there anyway to mix up a Kalk/Selco solution and take it to a lab to compare it with the Joes juice? Or is that against some kind of laws?

Why the lab? Why not just try it at home? I'd guess that even pureed shrimp, etc mixed in at like 20% would work the same way.

You'll never know what is in it without extremely expensive analysis. Its not a simple test. If there is anything organic in there, its out the window. Very time consuming and costly. If its just Ca or just K, then possibly. Its not worth it for anyone though. Just trial and error at home is mainly what I was referring to.

I would assume that any organics are what causes the feeding response and not what kill the anemone. I'm interested in the chemicals that do the killing.
