I use hydrated lime/calcium hydroxide from the farm co-op.
The reason being cost. I buy a 25 kilo bag (about 55 lbs) for $9.

Laboratory grade calcium hydroxide.

Why ?

Cheap, reasonably pure - in fact unnecessarily so but I'm too much of a wimp to use builder's lime, which would be just as good.

I've used Mrs. Wages for about 2 years now. It's about 10 times as cheap and just as effective as the stuff packaged by Kent. I also use labgrade Na(CO3)2 for buffer. It's just baking soda.

Interesting. I used Mrs Wages stuff for about 6 months until I noticed that while cleaning the magnetic spinner in my kalk reactor, it had tons of tiny metal shaving attached to it. There is not metal whatsoever in contact with anything in my reef. A friend also got the same results using Ball's pickling lime with the same kind of reactor. I have personally also used ESV and Kent and got the same results with both. I will start trying the Warner marine stuff and see what happens.

When i dosed kalk i used Kent Marine.
reason is because i didnt know there was cheaper stuff.

Cheaper is not always better but in this instance I might try another brand to see if I get the same results at a cheaper price...

Btw is copper magneticly active.
Someone should do a lab test on these cheap kalks Mrs Wages to see if they are acceptable for reef use.
