a question: using a high wattage bulb farther away from the surface of the water kind of defeats the reasoning of a higher wattage bulb to begin with, doesn't it? (inverse square law, and all that)

Sure, but I can not afford a chiller. Plus I doubt highly that 5-9" difference will make a 400 preform like a 175. I have a crocea doing great at the bottom of my 210g. Just my opinion speaking though. Plus I get into the tank a good bit and feel better with that added room. I almost burnt myself a few times though.
