i've always kept mine as close to the water surface as possible-usually 2-4" between the outer bulb envelope, and the water surface

higher wattage bulbs may require more (i was usin 175 watters), since they may be more susceptible to 'exploding' if hit w/a drop of water, given the hotter temp of the bulbs

without having to break out the tape...

from the uppermost lip of the aquarium's frame to the inner 'ceiling' of the canopy i have 11". this is a stock unit, not DIY.

so, where the halides sit above the surface of the water as opposed to this dimension, i don't know... prolly somewhere around 7" or 8", i suppose.

Okay

I think I will make my Canopy 10" high total

This will give me between 7 and 8 inches between the water and the bulbs

Tanks for all the replys

I just built my hood 12" inside. This way if I decide to go a higher wattage or I'm having heat issues I have that additional height to move them up.

Right now from bulb to H2O I'm right at 10.5".

But why?

the likely hood of a splash from a fish in my tank reaching 12 inches is abysmally small. The biggest fish in my tank will be a Pearlyscale butterfly fish.

The only concern is keeping the water off the bulb right?

a question: using a high wattage bulb farther away from the surface of the water kind of defeats the reasoning of a higher wattage bulb to begin with, doesn't it? (inverse square law, and all that)

Hey Vitz

Since you are here and all, will I need to put any other kind of lights in with the Metal Halides or will they do the job by themselves??

thanks

heh-i used actinic supplements for the 1st 6 mo. after settin up me first tank after movin back to the states in '95

since then, i've never used any other light other than halide, and have found them lacking in nothing at all, from tank's inhabitants, or my own aesthetic, perspective

what size tank are me old lights goin' on?

seeing as how they're 175's, i'd recommend abit closer than 12" :wink"

i had 'em about 3" above the water surface (edge of bulb envelope) on a tank 1' tall (the 20 long)

if they were 250 watters, i'd say 8-10" would be excellent

my $0.02

how's the leather coral, btw? fragged yet?

That is cool, I would like the hood to be smaller anyway

I have my 175 watt 7" on my 55 gal. I think it was about 4" when it was on my 38 gal, but that was with a cover glass.

Hey knucklehead - just curious what make of bowfront tank? Are you building the canopy yourself? I am moving my 58 gallon rectangular tank to the basement and want to go to a bowfront in the family room - its a better fit in the room.

Thanks Shellshocked
