I was informed that a Mantis Shrimp Forum could be in consideration. I've never had one, but will soon, and the possibility of a Forum intrigues me. I'd like to know if you'd support having discussions about this LOVE/HATE RELATIONSHIP.

Thanks

Why not? The more info in specialized locations, the less people who dont want to hear about em' anymore will have to listen to mantis-topics and such...

Definitely would love one...I've got a spare 10gal that I'm trying to convince my g/f to let me setup for a mantis...she wants a purple reef lobster and I don't think it'll do well in a 10gal.

Why would anyone vote no?? Seems kinda rediculous.

But anyhow I think it would be a great idea, especially since I have one now.

I vote no, and I think it's logical. Here's why.

1. The mantis forum on reefcentral's forums doesn't have that much turnover
2. There are no other species specific forums on this site (it'd be out of character).
3. A broader classification is available: predatory cretures. This would include mantis shrimp but might also liven up the particular forum by talking about cephalopods, sharks etc. I realize that a great deal of stuff on this planet is predatory, but naturally it would be limited to discussion of predatory species which are commonly found in the aquarium trade. An alternate title could be: cool things that kill stuff. I like that.
4. If you make a mantis forum, I'll post on it anyhow. I'll post like a mofo. Be sure to PM Gonodactylus (check spelling) on the RC mantis forum.
5. Yay!!

Of all the reasons Hwarang presented, only one presented a grave enough concept to warrant serious analytical debate:

5.Yay!!

Hwarang, are you aware of the gravity of this claim? The sacred 5th reason is no reason to be fiddling your yorkers and sticking yays where you slightly fancy!

Seriously though (as seriously as I can get), I think a predatory aquatic animals forum would be stupendous yay. Imagine all the posters yay that would find enlightening information yay! You know yay, I bet even yay mandarins would warrant such yay a merit!
Spleh-Dah! Anyone watch Futurama tonight? [AS]? Anything?!
*homogenates* YAY!

No offense to either of you, but the predatory aquatic creatures idea is LAME!!! :P Hehe...
Seriously, just about any animal that doesn't eat algae for a living can fit under that category. From mandarins to morays, angelfish to sharks. Groupers, triggers, wrasses, crabs - see what I'm getting at? Stomatopods are not interesting because they eat crabs and fish, that's not what makes them so darn cool.
Mantis shrimp are a VERY unique animal. They are extremely intelligent and have demonstrated amazing ability to learn in labaratory experiments. They also happen to have the most advanced optical apparatus in the entire animal kingdom! Furthermore, the strike of the stomatopod is one of the fastest movements in the animal kingdom. Besides all that, they make interesting pets.
Whatever the level of traffic, I think they deserve their own forum and should NOT be lumped in with sharks and mandarins.
So there!! I take your "pretatory creatures" idea and fart in it's general direction!

mmm-i have afeeling that a forum so specialized wouldnt get much attention. perfect example-the propagation tips and techniques forum. Its a good forum, but there is not much action there.WE could have a predatory inverts and predatory fish forum. But that osrta runs into the Aquarium fish and Aquarium Inverts discussion forums. :?

That's one of our concerns fishfanatic2. How can we make certain that we will get a fair amount of traffic to this SIG forum -- if we would go forward with it?

But is the traffic the most important issue when setup a new forum?

I understand from the sponsors/RDO point of view, it is a very important factor, but with same number of users that only want to spend a limited amount of time broswing around, there is no way you can get more traffic in it without "hurting" the other related forums.

OTOH, it will save some people a lot of time if they know exactly where to look for info/question when they need it. That way, they can use the spare time for other more productive activity other than doing search/browse at irrelevant threads.

hehe i'm not offended. i was just suggesting one possible alternative. if you can think of another broad classification that mantids would fit into ... put forth yer idea!

also, no offense to RDO, but i was basing my opinion on the hellaciously slow traffic on the RC mantis forums. they have ultra forum traffic, yet the mantis one is very stale. 1 or 2 new posts a day. but it's very valuable... hmm. . . . . . . .

Yeah, I peeped out the one on RC. You are right about the traffic and how it can be helpful. I think there's a growing interest in keeping these guys as pets and a lot more we can learn about them. It would also be a good place to list giveaways for those that would like to get rid of them. That as opposed to getting flushed or stepped on.

Totally. Their popularity is snowballing lately. I have spoken w/ local fish stores and they have sensed the interest, and will stock a mantis now and then when they run across it, but reliable suppliers are rare (ffs, TBS could totally cash in on selling the N. wennerae they cull from their live rock).

Also, many ppl that have mantids keep multiples, so a even a small community could help disseminate a lot of mantids.

I dont see why we need a mantis forum..why not a tang forum or an aiptasia forum while youre at it? keeping it in a general discussion forum will get higher visibility IMO..So my vote was no... :D
