Is your friend 100% sure that the lobstered died and did not just molt? The molt would look just like the lobster except dead.

I don't know about the feather duster question as I have never kept them myself.

Welcome to RDO too! I forgot how to do the img thing with the picture welcome, or else, I'd put one in!

But as for the feather duster, it's performing one of two functions, neither of which are usually talked about in polite company. One of the activities is elimination of waste, the other activity is reproductive.

Neither is likely to be toxic to your lobster (or fish or inverts).

I assume you've got one of those giant Hawaiian feather dusters?

the feather dusters just had sex thats all they did which is totally unrelated to your friends lobster dying....i would ask if your friend did anything to the water....ie. large change, dose anything in the past 72hs, make any changes to water conditions....i'm betteing that has something to do with why your lobster kicked it and your dusters went sexual

Hello, where in P.R. are you?

The only "blue lobster" I'm familiar with is a freshwater animal. It's actually a crawfish. Could your friend have put a freshwater crustacean into a saltwater system?

I have a purple lobster in my system... sounds a lot like an iodine deficiency in your friend's water. The lobster needs ~0.06mg/l of iodine to help in the molting process, if insufficient iodine is present the lobster will die while attempting to molt.

oh yeah, let me attach the official welcome:

Such is the problem with common nomenclature, because I only know those as spiny lobsters. ;)

It's good you add iodine to your tank... hopefully you'll have better success than your friend.

I was born in New Orleans, but have always had most time with my mother's side of the family. Yes, I do believe I have some family in Bayamon.. not certain, though. My mother was raised in San German (the next plaza over from Porta Ceoli (sp?) ), which is where my grandparents and some other family members still live. I also have family in San Juan, Rio Piedras, Guayama, Parguera, and on the other side of El Yunque - all over.

It can, but I believe it takes a little while for this to happen. Also, if he's been doing regular water changes, then there shouldn't have been a problem. There are many, many other possible reasons for the death.

Without knowing any other water parameters, as well as how long the tank's been set up, filtration, and so on, we'd be shooting in the dark while trying to guess at what happened. I suggest strongly that you don't dose chemicals, etc., that you don't test specifically for. It's just as bad to overdose as to underdose in many situations, and in order to prevent that you need to know what your starting point is, as well as where you're at. In my experience, with every crustacean I have ever handled, I've never needed to dose iodine, or even calcium. I simply keep up with regular water changes, and once I switched to Real Ocean (collected off Catalina Island out here) there was even less need to worry.
