DOGMAI,
Relax, you must be bored ;) I didn't dig back 8 months, I simply did a search on the topic I wanted information on. Typically seasoned posters on discussion boards critisize new posters for *not* using the search engine.

>...Distilled is seperated from contaminants at a molecular level, and is so pure that it will not conduct electricity.

Not true.

>...It is used in labs and for calibration of instruments.

Some biolab use triple distilled water, but most use DI.

>....Using this water will not cause any problems.
....

I am not disagree with you on this statement for the most part, but just on the comparison between distilled and RO/DI.

>...Distilled water is an active absorber because it is so pure, and it was once thought unhealthy to drink because it was said to strip the body of needed elements. This is all bunk, and most of these statements came from the marketers of water purification systems.

The same argument was used for the "danger" of drinking RO/DI water, and as I mentioned in many other threads, it only mean that the drinker is unaware of the lack of certification of DI resin for potable water filtration, and the high cost of the process with little, if any, benefit.

Not true.
Did the experiment myself in beginners chemistry in college, and it was one distillation proces not three.
I seriously doubt a ro-di unit can further clean distilled water. And if water molecules only are turned to steam, and condensed, leaving behind the contaminants, how can you claim the statement false?

Try to see if you can get pure water from beer?

The resistance of distilled water can be high enough that it fools you to believe it does not conduct electricity. But if you want a resistance of 18 megaohm per cm, you can only get it by DI, not distillation.

Pure water consists of electrically neautral h2o molecules. The electrons normally used to create current when an electric potential is applied do not exist. So yes I guess there would be high resistance, closer to 20 megaohm's. How is that fooling you into something.

CO2 in the air, for example, can lower the resistivity of water from 18 meg down to 14 or lower. Organic ions with similar boiling point as water, for example, can get over to the product of the distillation process. Contamination in the air also will increase the conductivity of distilled water.

To do it properly, distillation should be done in nitrogen atmosphere, and the product water is degased, and store under nitrogen gas. But for majority of undergrad work, it is not necessary to go thru the hassle.

Don't take my statement wrong. I am not saying that distillation is not good for reef tank. In almost all the cases, distilled water is perfectly fine for topoffs and what not. But I just want people to know that it is not true to say that distill or RO/DI is better than the other.

Beside, I like to nickpick when it come to certain topics. :)

After walking through several campus chem labs that need ultrapure water, I can tell you for certain that the vast majority use multiple stages of deionization.

Exactly, the fact is that we all want pure water, well at least most of us do anyway.I dont mind using any kind of purified water, just not tap.

right matt, they can make large ammounts of very pure water quickly with the DI units. I guess my community college was kinda cheesy, they got distilled in large jugs for lab use. Also it was quite a while ago that I was there.

Question for you chemical wizards. I have read (online mostly) that distilled water that is made with copper coils can leach copper back into the 'finished' water which in theory would be detremental to any inverts. Any thoughts?

B-Ionic has copper in it, and I use it everyday. I guess it's a good thing algae can remove it from the water. I've been using distilled water for four years, never caused me any problems. I like how you said in theore though, in theore the B-Ionic should be detrimental to the tank, but the opposite is true. And like the water, we argue about how dirty 99.9% pure water is, when in theore 100% pure is unatainable. Something that interested me was that the other .01% of that water contains all other elements, so everytime we add anything to our tanks we are adding a long list of ingredients wether we like it or not.

Thanks for the answer Zoo, I've always thought that idea didn't hold water (pun intended).

Actually, Pretty Clown, I heard that majority of distillation plant use aluminium condensor due to weight and cost issue. Copper condensor is hard to find except in smaller/older plants.

Pretty? Wow you made my day.

As far as the aluminum, that was my understanding as well, but since I'd seen that "copper" rumor posted all over I thought I'd bring it up ;).

I have not posted here in a long time, and now that I am back i have been reading for about 3 or 4 days. In this time I have come to shall we say not care for Fatal Morgana. Whenever I read a post by this person I am reminded of the friend that everybody has. You know the one that has a better story than you Always. They also know everyhting. Quite irritating. This person almost always posts to dissagree only. Just my two cents. I am nobody that matters. Just hate seeing that name in every post contradicting everybody.
