I've used distilled water for a 29-gal reef tank for over a year....no problems. I couldn't justify a RO/DI unit at the time.

For smallish tank, it is difficult to justify a delicated filter. I used more water from the water filter for my household use more than my reef tank. Most people here use bottled water since the tap water here is so bad.
