It can house your heater, skimmer, sock, and filter media. If you want to use it as a refugium, you can light it up and have LR, LS, and macroalgae. For extra nutrient export, clams and xenia will do well in a refugium.

A sock can simply be a mesh bag that catches large particulate. Macroalgae is a term generally used to describe saltwater plants like Caulerpa or Chaetomorpha.

Brandon,

Don't consume all of this so quickly. :? You're 14. Have you been to the mall at all this week? Seriously, you should have at least a dozen phone numbers from Spring Break alone. Call up a cutie and go watch Hellboy. 5 pages of reef dialogue isn't healthy for a teen.

Ahem,

...nitpicking...

Those are algae, not plants. There are very few truly saltwater plants.

Sorry.

Brandon,
I think you would benefit from a good book. There's a lot of advice that we won't be able to give you at a moment's notice, and it will be handy to have a book around.

I'll give you an example: My first SW tank was a 29 gallon. I did everything right from the start, mixed up some salt, calibrated the salinity and temperature, added some live rock, added a skimmer, and waited 6 weeks to add my first fish. I then tested my water, and everything checked out "OK". I added fish after fish that died within two or three days. I explained my story to LFSs, friends, etc, no one could figure out what was wrong. It took me around 6 dead chromis to figure out that I never dechlorinated my tap water, and the fish were simply dying from chlorine in the water...duh!

Looking back on it, it sounds like just about the stupidest thing I could have done, but at the time it didn't even occur to me. My point here is that we do dozens, if not hundreds, of things to our tanks that seem like second nature to us, but that aren't obvious if you've never kept a tank before. A good book like Ron Shimek's "The Reef Aquarium" or John Tullock's "Natural Reef Aquariums" is a great investment to save yourself from such costly mistakes.

I got an idea...get a little hottie that likes Borders or Barnes and Noble etc. Hang out for a while, browse a book or two on reefkeeping, let her read Teen People. She'll think your cool, brainy, and intellectual. Then take her to Hellboy HEH HEH HEH!
Mutually beneficial to all involved...at least you anyway.

Did you guys really like Hellboy that much??

I saw it and it was cool and all but I think there should have been more action. All that dead guy did was twirl his knives around.

I thought it was a decent movie. A great mix of comedy, romance, and action. I never got into the comic, so I have no reference. Personally, I think it was a lot better than Spiderman was (aka Disney/Power Ranger feel). Supposedly, 2 versions of the DVD will be released. Standard version, than one with 20 minutes of extra footage. Not sure if that's 20 minutes of more action.

It was my Spidy too when I used to collect comics. I was really disappointed when I rented movie. The cheesy dialogue really meant it was geared toward the 13 and under crowd. Dunst is no MJ by no stretch of the imagination. Sweet deal for you cousin though. A gig's a gig.

Cool. Don't admit that your Spring Break is boring. Try the Barnes & Noble routine.

You can say that three times fast... or is it "you can say that fast twice" ... or is it "the faster you say it three times wins" Whatever the saying is your right.

I was a little disaoointed that they gave him actual web instead of using his cartridges. In the comics when he runs out of web he gets a beatdown which is pretty crucial to the spider man story. And Mj isnt his first love

His web cartridge was a testament to his intellect and technical abilities. Gwen Stacy, right.

See, Brandon. Instead of spending a third of my time dedicating songs to girls over the radio, another third on comics, and the remaining third on reef tanks at 14, I should have been devoting all my time to the opposite sex. :?

wow -- this is a running commentary on current movies, social scenes, economics, aging, blah blah blah.

JustReefIt -- everyone's right. Like Matt said, start with a book. If you don't want to buy it, go buy a $4 cup of coffee and read it at a bookstore. read the posts here and at RC (reefcentral). you are obviously dedicated -- take your time. nothing is quick with reef aquaria. sure, with FW you can set it up and have fish in it in 24 hours (or sooner with additives). This is one thing that makes the reef community a community -- very dedicated people with the drive to learn, spend money, take time, and most of all -- laugh at themselves occasionally. Remember that we all started out as newbs at one time or another (esp. those of us who started out before all this "slanguage"...remember real BBSes?)
