While everyone else is asking for recomendations today, I'll throw in another.

Best heater(s) for a 90 reef (manufacturer)?
What wattage?
How many?

Winter is comming quickly to the state of Ohio.

I have a Pro-Titanium in the sump of my 90, believe it's the 250 watt model. Never have any problems with it. Seems to be quite accurate thermostat wise. I have the non-digital display version. That's my offering.

Usually by TG we are ready for some snow. It is a shame you will miss the fall foliage, nice colors this year.

Thanks for the advice!

I only use Ebo-Jabers myself. I have used them for years and they are built like tanks.... well glass tanks. Never had a problems with them.

I'm using two 150w Visi-therm by Aquarium Systems. I have used them with my large, highly aggresive FW fish and I still have them so, they work for me

LMAO at that last...I too use cheap crap leftover heaters- well- I did buy a new visi therm for the reef-- but otherwise I never had a a heater fail, break yes-- fail no-- react poorly to ambient changes-- yes-- does anyone know if the new digital numbers hold a true temp- or do they change with ambient changes too?

Any difference between preformance of titanium versus "glass" heaters?

They are going in a sump, so if the only advantage is that titanium are harder to break...

Visi therm seems to be a good choice.

I have had very good luck for years with the titanium won pro heaters.

After being shocked twice by a glass heater, I will never go back to glass.

But, finally the other day I had one of my won pros fail on me, it wouldn't turn off. This one was maybe four years old? I still think they are the best heaters you can buy. Anyway, I think it is a good idea to assume any heater can fail and take precautions. I noticed the problem immediatly because I have my temperature display in a spot that I see it many times a day, it's right at eye level.

That is my biggest fear. I have twice in my lifetime to a tank full of dead FW fish and a glowing heater. No fun.

And that is the reason I have not used tank heaters in 25 years. Just another thing to fail. My current 55g with ~400w NO lighting varies from ~80-83 through the day. So there is obviously no need for a heater.

Now if you are maintaining your system in a spare room where the temperature is like 65 degrees, then a tank heater would make sense. But in any normal living environment comfortable to humans, I just don't see the need.

I have mine in a basement that can get pretty cool in the winter. Everything made it through fine last winter, although I do not know how cold the water got. Last winter I did not have a heater or a thermometer  .

I just figured I would get heaters for this winter...

How cold can you let the temp get?

I don't think the temperature should swing more than three degrees or so, depending on how delicate your stock is.

I have to have lots of heaters, because I have a large remote sump area in my basement, and that area of the house gets chilly. Plus the water being pumped through hoses cools them off too, because I keep the house temperature in the mid 70's. Since I have a large water volume and it takes several heaters to heat the water, I am in a sense safer from heaters sticking on, because any one heater is not so powerful by itself that it could raise the temp dramaticly on it's own. When my heater stuck on I noticed that the tank was about 2 degrees higher than normal.

So, if possible, it is advisable to have two lower wattage heaters rather than one biggie one. If one malfunctions and sticks on, the functioning one will not turn on, and hopefully the malfunctioning one will raise the temperature slowly, as it would be underpowered for you tank by itself, giving you time to notice.

One day I came home and my precious Rainsford goby that I loved dearly was floating, cooked, in my 20 gallon tank, which was a higher temp than my thermometer could even read.

:( I was using a heater of unknown brand, that I had owned for a long time. It was so sad, I really liked that fish. Now, I take heaters very seriously.

If heaters give me any trouble, or act "off" in any way, I toss them.

I also use several underpowered heaters rather than one heater that is capable of doing all the work on the tank.

I have a remote digital temperature display, so I can keep the display somewhere that I see it many times a day. And I also don't use glass heaters anymore, because I have been shocked by one that had cracked for some reason.

I use won heaters on a temp controller, which I think is the best possible combination.

I am going to get a temp controller once funds are approved! Until then, I will be vigilent in watching the temperature display.

Is it the heaters that fail or is it the contollers\built in contollers...I think we'd all like to be like beaslbob (NOT) and not have to use heaters but for some of us, even in So Cal our tanks need them..

IMO, its the built in contollers that are failing. I'm looking at one of these in the link below along with a good controller.
