thats why you get an optional membrane flush kit. run it every few weeks and it backs the crap back out of the membrane for added life.

the faster your RO membrane will burn out and the more often your filters will have to be changed.

Isn’t a membrane basically a bag with microscopic holes that allow water through and solids to be held and washed out in the disposed water? And if this is what a membrane is wouldn’t an old membrane only become clogged and less efficient in it’s usage of water?

Yeah, but it can be very complicated too. For example, the shape of the "hole" can be changed, so that you will have more junks going thru the membrane.

I just installed a 50GPD RO system. After about 15 gallons of filtering, the clear container to view the carbon filter is already turning tan. 8O Is this normal? Anybody else have really bad tap water?

After using this for a day, we're seriously thinking about putting in a "house filter".

Has anyone contacted their town regarding water purity? And if so, what procedures have you done, and has the town responded either way?

TDS meter is coming. Just ordered today.

It is "normal" in the sense that if you disturb the plumbing system, the first few gallon of water usually is really bad. I usually flash the first gallon out before reconnecting the filter for this reason.

(Some of you may try this... turn off the shut off valve of your kitchen faucet, then turn it back on. Now when you use your faucet, a lot of time you will see brown water in first few second)

I think most city in the USA has water report. Contact the company that take your water bill payment.

do you know what your tds was of your tap water? if you have old pipes you might be getting some rusty water despite what your city water tds is. if you have a handheld tds meter grab some measurements at diffrent places around town.

yeah... that's what I plan on doing. I will post results when I get it up and running too. In the mean time, we are very happy with the new "clean" water. :) ... the fish will be too.

That happens to me too. The TDS of our tap water ranges from 550 to 600.

Lots of rust and very very hard. If you fill up the bathtub, you can see the water has a slight rust colored tinge.

I have added many prefilters to my RO/DI system for this reason.

I also don't drink the plain tap water either.

I just reordered all new parts for my RO/DI. After I hook it back up, what's the procedure...how much do I let run down the sink before I begin filling up my rubbermaid tub?

I have a flush kit, as well...should I use that?

i think your safe if you run 5 gallons though. i have never used a flush kit before but i assume that every month or so it's a good idea to flush it out.

I think the Deep Blue Sea has a TDS of around 35000, not 10. Check your reading again ;)

How many stages of filters do you have?

mine outa the tap is 10! dang 600! imagine all that crap in your coffee or shower everyday. wow

10! Dayum, I would be tempted to use tap in my reef!

Our water is so hard you can clean the sink, and as soon as you get water in it again it looks dirty with hard water spots.

I have three sediment filters, these get replaced often. They go, 1 micron, .5 micron, then .1 micron. Then the carbon block filter, then the RO, then the DI. So I guess that is six stages total!

Not everyone needs that of course, when I lived on the east coast just the carbon and RO gave us great water, but here where we live now I have to put more effort into it.

I try and get the water as clean as possible before it hits the RO unit. Before I did that we were blowing through RO membranes left and right!

OK good. This is what we are using as well.. a 6-stage include DI. We are also thinking about putting on a water purifier for the entire plumbing, hopefully it would be cheaper in the long run than to replace these filters every week! 8O

We got the TDS meter in the mail, and here are the results:

Tap Water: 215 PPM
RO Water: 000 PPM.

(We thought the TDS Meter was broken when we tried the RO water first.)

At least we know our 6 stage filter is working!! Bad news is, those filters cost about $40.00 to change out! 8O

Any suggestions out there? We're thinking of filtering our house water so that it's a bit cleaner when it finally hits the RO filter cluster.

So, after 12 days of ROing, here are the results of the filters. There was no way we were going to wait 6 months, per manufacturer's suggestion to change them out! 8O
