Well i didnt keep up too much with the whole contest during its conception..Im not sure the rules or what prizes if any are to come into play..However I think this should be the official ask the contestants thread
The ***Nano buildoff*** forum is specifically designed for those participants to post their progress..Here would be a good place for comments suggestions and compliments...

Good luck guys

2. Water flow. I will handle this with a closed loop. I will run the loop by having 2 holes drilled in the overflow area, up from the bottom of the tank, to two ~1500gph pumps seperatley.

This one is for Tackett - Hey man.... 3000 GHP through a 19 gallon tank 8O it's going to be one big splash zone!

TLD - Building your tank from scratch. I really admire that. Gutsy move, I hope you get extra points for that.

Thanks Guy, I just hope that it turns out well enough not to have any points deducted for my DIY tank

Any opinions about if an auto-topoff container (limewater) should be counted in the total gallons?

I just read it again... only one pump on at a time but 1500gph is still going to be interesting.

FWIW I run a quiet one 4000 at 1000 gph on a closed loop for my 20L. I think a 1500 gph pump would have been perfect. I still have one dead spot even with the high flow and skimmer return. Sorry to get off track.

Tanks open top with a 14.5 K 250 DE MH, no heat issues. Although the 1/10 hp chiller on powerbuy now is tempting me.

FWIW, I'd love to see someone try a flow tank in this contest. ;) I've got a 30 long that I'd love to try this out on someday...

That reminds me of an old tank we used to have at UCD, except much larger. I think it was about 8' long. What are they used for exactly?

Used to flow water at a very precise velocity and make the entire water column move across the tank as opposed to a tiny jet from a powerhead. Most of it is covered in the article IIRC.

Each pump will push alot less than 1500. I am going to put a gate or ball valve on the return, and a SCWD after each pump on each side to alternate the current up and down for 7 hour cycles. So in all actuality, It will probably end up being 1000 on each side alternatley, which was what I was shooting for. I still think even with this amount, Im going to have a dead spot on the back corner of the tank.

You guys think that 1/2 inch thick acrylic is too much for 19Lx19Wx12H?

I was going to go with 0.35...but it kinda scares me.

opinions?

12H doesn't put much water pressure at the bottom. You could easily go .35 but the walls might bow a bit unless you also have bracing around the top and the full bottom will need support so it doesn't sag in the middle.

Tackett,
Assuming you are using cast acrylic, .35 should be fine for the 12" high tank even without top bracing. There's a calculator on the Cyro website Click on the "TechKnowlogy Center" and you'll see the link for the Aquarium Thickness Calculation.

Of course, there's nothing wrong with making your tank bombproof either
