I am looking for a good external...but reasonably priced water pump...i know rio's are crap. I dont want to allocate the funds for a rolls royce...just looking for a durable, quiet external chevy...or honda,,
MAG DRIVE or quiet one i love the,. i pumped sand befor with my quietone without any problems ( sand with a little water. like a slurpy feeling . but who else stuck there hands in a slurpy befor?)
I think the GenX Mak4 is a good pump in that price range, although they tend not to be very popular on this board it seems. They aren't super-quiet, so if that is your primary concern it may not be the best choice, but I have had several that have lasted for years, they just don't quit.
just out of curiosity...what is considered a rolls royce? ...and how much would i expect to pay. I only need plumb a sump to my 92 corner with built in corner box...
With no doubt go with a PanWorld if you can spend the money, they are quiet and run cool. Very well made. I picked up mine used from someone on RC that only used it a short time. I can not be happier. I also use little giant and a mak 4. I used a quiet one 400HH and hated it it. It was the loudest piece of crap I ever used. I also used Mag-Drives, they are decent pumps and I only had one problem with a mag 9.5 getting a chip in the inside of the impellar hoousing.
FWIW, I just bought a new Mag 9.5 to run as a in sump return for my 40 breeder. I was to cheap (all the CC are maxed) to go to the PanWorld and needed a sub. pump. I bought a new/used one from Ebay for 54.90 including shipping. The seller has many of them on there and if you are strapped for cash this may be a good way to go. I have never ran a mag drive externally though besides on a calcium reactor.
This is the guy I bought the Mag from, I will let you know how it goes when it shows up.
Well, I am rebuilding my tank now, and I bought a Dolphin AmpMaster3000 from Premium Aquatics for $240.
That is what I consider a Rolls Royce, at least for my requirements (and that is a really good price... and no, I'm not in any way affiliated with Premium Aquatics.)
I'm a Little giant fan. Had one on my 46. I had it hard plumbed and it had a lot of vibration noise so I added a 6 inch piece of flexable tubing and gave the pump rubber "feet" and it turnt out to be soooo quiet. I ran it for about 5 years and when I was having some household wiring problems the pumped stopped and couldn't get it restarted but I still think it was a very reliable external.
I have 2 quiet ones in my tank. I've had no problems with either of them for the half year I've had them. The only jam I've had is when I was moving things around in my refug, a big ball of chaeto got loose and sucked right into the intake. 5 seconds and it was fixed.
Of the list I only have personal experience with Mags. I never had any problem with them even when run external. I now have a Blueline and it is a really good pump.
Quiet Ones are an oxymoron. They consider "quiet" 40 decibels... From the small model I'm running I'm lead to believe that the sound produced from inside a jet engine is 50 db and a catastrophic explosion enveloping the entire universe is around 85db.
They're noisy, they grind, and they're overrated. I returned one and said it was defective.. Got a replacement.. It's the same, horrifyingly noisy piece of crap.
Little Giant. Less heat transferred to water, exceptional quality, no noise compared to plastic-made pumps.
I have several of them working with minimun maitenance for years. One of them is an old timer 12 years old 3MD.
I have 3 tanks in my bedroom, they all run penguin or quiet ones powerheads and as I'm sitting here all I can hear is the overflow in the big tank. Dunno what to tell ya :?:
