its funny nuke power is cleanest and safest thing there is... then just throw the waste into a desert where it wont hurt anything. ( if ya do it right)
or oneday sending it all to the sun ^^ but do they really prefer oil.

nuke = very small chance of melt down or leakage.
oil = global warmingm, spilling, fires,///

Agreed. The waste issue is a bit troubling, but I'd rather trash nevada than the whole planet. I always wonder why they can't just fling crap we don't want into space, but I guess it takes more energy than the fuel generated to start with.

What would have been the result if Challenger had been carrying a load of high level nuclear waste when it exploded?

Well obviously the space shuttle would be about last place on the economically viable and safe list. The best way would be to literally throw it, then you wouldn't have to deal with all those unreliable moving burning parts etc.

Lots 'o G force to throw something that far. Are you thinking a big rail gun?

There's a lot of energy still available in "spent" nuclear fuel. Perhaps enough to devise a way that it can throw itself.

Yeah, I was thinking rail gun.

I'm sure there's an easier way we haven't thought of yet.

Yes, A station held in orbit using a buckyball tether to Earth. Place the waste on the tether with a small boost and centrifugal force causes the package to slide up the tether and get flung into deep space.

You still need a pretty big boost guy. You still have to get to the point where the 'centrifugal' force is greater than the force of gravity. Both ideas are impractical at this time although the space elevator idea has a lot of momentum to it. Here is an interesting article on it.

railguns would (currently) cost alot to use
we can build one that is caable of it at this time BUT the rails need to be replaced every few firings because much of the metal turns to plasma

Yeah, that's true.

However, there's plenty of "Heat" left in the waste to power a "Line Crawler" using a steam engine that could slowly crawl up the line until it's in orbit. From there centrifugal force could accelerate the package for the "flinger". LOL

any one seen the futurama episode where a ball of trash is heading towreds the earth and it ends up that it was trash they put in space 1000 years ago..
how to fix problom?
send another ball of trash at that one to knock it into the sun. what about the new ball of trash. screw it we wotn be around

^^

yeah those space elecators seem cool.
