Has anyone carried on fish/inverts/corals on a plane flight? Is it allowed? I'm talking domestically, not having to deal with customs or anything, just security. I am going to be in SFO visiting my mom later this summer and would love to stop by Atlantis or some of the other great shops up there. Would I be able to bring frags home on the plane?

Every airline feels different about it. Contact your airline and find out.

This topic comes up every year around IMAC and MACNA. Some have success, others don't.

I was in Hawaii and was going to try on American last year, so I called the Department of Agriculture and they said they did not care as long as I bought it at a local lfs, but when I called the airline they said no way on their plane even as carry on.

When I have done it, I put the frags in water bottles for my convenience - perhaps that is why they didn't bother me at all about it.

Water bottles...great suggestion. Much more sturdy than plastic bags. If I kept them in bottles in my carry on would temperature be a concern or should I keep them in a small soft cooler or something. I think most of the time it would be around 72-75 degrees.

I wouldn't put them in a cooler, but thats me. If you are worried, you could also just use a thermos.

thermos is a good idea or one of those textile (but insulated) lunch sacks. i believe they're waterproof as well as insulated.

but i've carried corals onto planes in paper bags (with the polybag inside). make sure you ask for a plastic carry bag, the paper got a little wet so i had to hold it the entire flight (2-hours from detroit to la guardia).

and yes, it was tropicorium. :P

So here's one thing I just thought of. You guys mentioned that I need to check with the specific airline to see if it's ok to carry them on. But what about getting them through security? Do they care? That's all I'm really worried about. I would have them in my carry on so no one on the plane would ever know I had corals on board. TSA will be the ones who know when they see them go through the x-ray.

Better yet, get it in writing. Any pilot can refuse anything according to FAA regs. The company might feel differently, or put you on a different plane too.

I think the issue will be when you reach the security checkpoints which aren't airline specific, so if you can get it past security simply leave it in your carry on luggage during the trip and no one will be the wiser. That being said I seem to recall some post-9/11 paranoia with security that would only allowed unopened beverage containers don't know if that's still the case (or if it was the airlines at all).

Bottom line have a backup plan, whomever takes you to the airport make sure they stay with you up to the security area, stick it a thermos or something, if they don't allow it on, give it to your friend who dropped you off and they can either fed-ex it or get a free coral :)

It's been many years since 9/11, many marine aquarium conferences of which more then a handfull of people had to carry on coral. Most were able to get their stuff home. I sat in Ohara after IMAC this year, and watched more then a couple frags trades in the terminal, after security. I even saw a guy on my flight checking on his babies (frags) while in flight

Well there ya go, from the man who has seen it all :)

That and I wouldn't put the security checkers on the high end of checking stuff, just dont hide anything in your shoes, and if they ask what it is be truthful about it. Although if they ask you to drink the water to make sure it's really water you might be in trouble ;)

A couple years ago, I went through security with a 2 liter soda bottle full of mangrove pods.

I brought "beach sand" in from Cozumel. I just didn't tell them it was wet. I claimed it as "sand" and when they asked us we said sand from a beach. They never bothered to even see the container.
