Just wondering here Rob. I'm curious where you found a mag12 for $69 plus shipping. I was doing something else today and the thought occurred to me that's an insane price. I see online they go for $101 or so which makes the $149 at the LFS much more reasonable.

Maybe where you get them for that should stay your little secret or the place will always be sold out and there won't be any for anyone. ;)

LOL dnorton.

Shavo, I looked at the links. A couple of those are for a 12 volt pump which has MAG in the nomenclature. The others are showing MAG12 pumps at $145+

justphish - those were prices a year ago when I needed a pump last. I should have stocked up.

They are $101 online now - my guess the LFS is $200 +.

I will have to go look now.

i love picking my fish out at the LFS.
buying online - ANYTHING ALIVE , just makes me feel uneasy.
BTW, i do not know every species of fish in the sea. i am not a marine biologist. therefore, i like to go to the LFS and BROWSE. then, i do something i have recently learned- go home and research the cool creature i spotted at the LFS. if he checks out, i am headed back. this is why the LFS is good.
not for lights, or pumps, filters...bla bla bla, unless of course you are wealthy, and in that case, who cares! support the LFS!
BTW....i just bought a 125 gallon tank with oak stand on ebay for $365.00!
woohoo!

One more thing i should mention: i DO buy from a semi-local store. it's 2 hours away. it's called "that fish place" in lancaster, pa., but it's really like a super-wholesale place anyway...

actually that is great advice for anybody here to read, do not just buy a fish becasue it is cool, my buddy bought wrasse and it destroyed his cleaner shrimp in 3 seconds of being in the tank. you have to know what you are getting when you buy something especially if it is a "reef tank" ,
great advice for everybody to just go by!

DO YOUR RESEARCH!!!!!

it took a long time to get to this point but atleast were here now!
good luck everybody and try to do your best to make your fish and animals as comfortable as you possibly can they were taken from there home and need people who care and who will take care of them and do the best that they can possibly do for them for all circumstances. I try to do the best I can and sometimes I buy a fish that doesn't look that good because i feel i can bring them back and give them a good home.

good luck with the 125!!!
Ebay rocks most of the time!!!

let me know if you need help setting up DK!

I do hear of wonderful stories of a GOOD LFS and how they help/stand behind what they offer but up here that is non existent.

How far are you going to find a store to satisfy your needs Rob? I completely understand "The principal of the matter" concept of not frequenting stores unless I have to. Here in Seattle I drive 45 minutes each way to go to the LFS that makes me happiest. I have three others within 20. One of which is petco that I wont step foot in. I like FISH ONLY stores. I am about to look at a couple other stores that are even further just so I have a better coral slection. I dont mind spending half a day doing something involving my hobby that I enjoy very much.

I don't even consider Petco a fish store, if you drive 45 minutes to go to petco that sucks,

doug, if you bought that fish at pets plus. It makes this whole post and all of my points legitamate!!! www.petsplussucks.com

I would love to hear what happens. please post your results here for all to see!!! positive or negative! you are just a little bigger than me maybe you will get better results than i do! lol

one thing though in there defense. I think all fish have ick and healthy ones are able to fight it off. it is the stress of being transported and acclimating to new water after getting used to the LFS water before you bought it and all the stress involved with that too.
fish stores keep there salinity at around anywhere from i heard 1.016 to 1.022 to keep parasites off of fish, my salinity is currently at 1.026 and it takes time to acclimate, i do atleast 2 hours of acclimating to get them ready for my tank. I don't know if you do , but you can't just dump them in like fresh water and also you need a protien skimmer!!!!

anybody want to defend the need for a protien skimmer? I need some facts better than you just need one! I did too much posting and too much research for tonight!

thanks RDO

I suggest you start a new thread concerning protein skimmers so this one stays (relatively) on topic.

there is 2 LFS withing 15 minute drives

the better one is about 50 minutes away. There is one own the street from my office that is really clean and looks like healthy fish but they are very expensive. I am affraid to see their prices on most things.

Of course they are likely more expensive due to prime real estate. It could be that they have more overhead in keeping the store pristine and have healthier fish. I would probably buy from the more expensive place if its closer to home due to the less travel time for the fish. I have found that the fish from my LFS is about the same as ordering it on line. I dont trust those UPS guys with a live fish myself. Again, I wont buy from the corporate monsters. I'd rather pay extra for Fish only stores. Then were full circle in the thread. Price, price, price.

yes. pets plus.
chris. you need to try "that fish place". their prices are comparable to online on most things. some of their fish are expensive, but generally, they are about half price of our local stores for pumps, filters.....
i am going to suggest pets plus GIVE me ich meds atleast. Rhonda (my wife, for those of you who don't know me) likes the tang, so i will save him. I like that store (pets plus), i just wish they took better care of their fish, or got a new livestock supplier. they have beautiful rock. so much life on it!

hey I have ich meds that are reef safe, don't buy copper and put it in your tank unless you set up a hospital tank real quick, They don't have this med at pets plus but they do have it at the fish factory on 413, it has worked for me but I decided to go and use my UV when problems occur and to avoid using medications now that i have corals. If i needed to I would use it as an emergency since I would have to break down my whole tank to get fish out of it. It's like 20 bucks and it won't hurt your live rock at all and says it is "reef safe". I have used it before and noticed no difference with anything, it just isn't as strong and takes a little time to clean it up.

That's because for decades That Fish Place was -the- giant in the mail order aquarium industry, the place that all the B&Ms liked to complain about as killing their business. These days they're overshadowed by DrsF&S, but they once dominated.
