How many corals should I be aiming for in my new tank (54x26x26). It will be a mix of SPS and LPS. I would like then corals a chance to grow to nice sizes, but have some varity. I have 11 now.

I have around 70 in my 300G. That may be a problem when they all grow up, but then I'll choose the ones I like the best and weed out the ones that aren't so great.

So along those lines, I get about 40 if I were you.

40ish, I guess that sounds reasonable. I need to start getting some cool colors then. I have pink, green, yellow, orange, purple and teal. I need some red and blue for sure.

Might as well go for 42 then.

(I guess I have ~23 in my 90g).

Get a oregon tort for the blue and a superman monti for the red.

You wan't be displeased with either.

Tyree's War Coral is another good red.

I agree with Louey on the grow and then select method. I have about 40 frag/colonies in the 120. I can already tell that I will have space issues when the tank matures. I will weed out the boring ones and hopefully start getting some rare and LEs.

Depending on your aquascape, you could do at least 50 in your 160g. Especially, if you have some lagoon space on the floor for LPS.

Well, I vote for the too many option. I had something in the order of 53 in my 46, since I upgraded to my 90 I have added about 15 more. My theory is the same as stated above. Get a bunch of cool ones, whichever ones grow the best and look nice I keep, the others get traded for some better ones lol. Right now my tank looks like a frag swap gone very wrong(or right), but in a year I think it will look nice. My first SPS from a year ago are starting to look very nice now and are branching and growing well, so in another year it ought to be very nice. Just in time for the army to say it is time to move again.

Do you want to have any particular "rarer" breeds? You can very easily get a mix of colors with cheaper montiporas and the rest of the cool factor can be had from acroporas.

Also do some research into which corals will sting others and try to segregate them based on species, for instances most montiporas I know are fairly benign, so have them in one area growing in/around each other can get to be some nifty looking combos. However get an Acropora millepora growing near them and BZZZAT! Bye bye monti.

I want nice, but not expensive corals, well maybe a few. Also, I want to get the corals I want in the end and not have to weed out later. I have two m caps and that is all the Monti's I want in the tank. I also want to get contrasting shapes. I really want a nice table.

I need purple also.

Mushrooms. They will eventually take over though. Mine went from 1 (1 year ago) to 3 (3 months ago) to 18 (this month.) 8O

I personally would avoid the mushrooms like the plague. They spread and cover everything. JMO though.

I feel you on that one. I wonder why my LFS sells them for so much. 1 large mushroom....$39.00. 8O

Maybe I should sell them some of mine. They really are getting plentiful.
