Dottybacks are known to spread alarm over global warming, without fully understanding the science behind the phenomenon.

How about is lobsters really do scream when you put them in boiling water. I've never had lobster, but I always heard you had to lower them into the water head first so you didn't hear their "screaming".

Hey, if it's used I want credit!

Apparently the producers were visiting today to possibly do a theme show at the aquarium. They're literally right around the corner from us here in SF.

Some of the ones we came up with were:

"You can kill a goldfish by overfeeding it"
"Peeing on a jellyfish wound will alleviate the pain"
"Humans can float in super salty water"

I need all your creative juices working folks...let's hear 'em!

Humans swim at different speeds in water vs jello, oil, etc. because of a change in Reynolds Number

Having not read the thread:

Giant clams catching divers feet
Jonah and the whale (which is really supposed to be a big fish)
Touching a coral will kill it
Overfeeding fish will kill them
Coral grows slowly
Watching a fish tank relaxes you
Fish is brain food
Lion fish stings will kill you
Blue ring octos will kill you

Brain dry...

I got a good story about that I'll have to tell you when you get here. Politics versus the reef.

Yanno I really am showing my geeky side here, but I wish they'd get rid of that twit. I know they got her for her boobs and to make the geek boys go ga-ga, but sometimes she can't even say her "smart lines" without looking at the cue cards.

That's odd, because Blowfish are known to inexplicably refute the concept of global warming without understanding ANY of the science behind the phenomenon.

I love Kari Byron. If they get rid of her, then they have to get rid of Adam and Jamie. Although the are clever guys, they do not background in science either.

Sardines do the same, in irritatingly short soundbites.

How about the one where a fish will only grow as big as its home?
First one that came to mind! :)

Easy...plausible and busted, depending on species. :D

They already did the jellyfish thing

Most "myths' that the 'public' think are just facts for us.

This one's true. I actually floated in the Dead Sea reading a magazine.
You can float in a regularly salted water (the ocean) or even a swimming pool. However, it's much easier to sit in super-salty water and float. I couldn't read at the time I got to go in the Dead sea though. The bit I floated in of course is dry land now :(

It isn't that you float in the Dead Sea, its more that you can't sink.

Perhaps something about how/can electric eels emit enough current/voltage to KO a horse? Id love to see them lead a horse into a tub of water with a 5-6' eels waiting to shock the crap out of it... can do it too (I used to keep a 4-5' one... woke up on the floor once).

Otherwise, .22 calibur bullets vs. the strike of a full size peacock mantis shrimp? That would be a fun one.

"Sharks are the top predator in the ocean"... then show that video of an octo catching and eating a shark at night. The same with whales, then show a giant squid eating a whale... but thats too much for an aquarium. The octo/shark one though... thats a beauty.

Oh... how about the story of the octopus at the store that gets out of its tank (lid with bricks on it), then crawls across to the goldfish tank, eats all the goldfish, then crawls back into its tank across the room? Or there is the one where the octo gets out every night, opens the bottle of fish food, eats some, then puts it back and crawls back to its tank again.
