I can understand some skimmers costing some money. But give me a break. 1200 dollars for that? People really overcharge for some of these things because there is always a sucker who will buy it.

something about that 'system' doesn't make sense to me...

if the claim about the zeolite they sell is that it eliminates ammonia, leading to no production of nitrites/nitrates (and by extension less phosphates, from the reduced bacterial activity), why do they also recommend a bacterial additive to eliminate nitrates ?

The material does not directly remove nitrite (NO2), nitrate (NO3), or phosphate (PO4)from the tank water. It permanently absorbs ammonium (NH4+) and ammonia (NH3),the first two chemicals in the nitrification cycle, thus preventing the formation of nitrite(NO2) and nitrate (NO3).

there are other things about what they say in their pdf 'guide' that sound abit 'iffy' to me-like stirring up the zeovit to release the bacteria that are in (and whatever else might be, heh) the media.

just seems to me to be more of trying to re-invent the wheel

remember, deltec is a favored skimmer among many hobbyist and they are way expensive.

Its the free market and consumers choose how much they want to spend. If everyone decided to stop buying skimmers, its a good chance that prices would go down to entice people to buy them.

The materials are fairly cheap, the labor put into them is there too, they can supply the demand, but its the NEED that makes the price jack up.

The demand for down drafts are low, therefore, a lot of them are priced very competitive to the Euro styles.

It just seems more people prefer the Euro style and the consumer pays for it. I myself prefer most Euro style skimmers to down drafts.

Am I going to run out and buy this skimmer...no. I am happy with my Bubble Master 200. Would I use that 1200 dollar skimmer on my tank? You bet I would.

the zeolites are a media to cultivate the growth of the bacteria. the zeolites do absorb some stuff, helping reduce nutrient load..but the bacteria are the major player here for nutrient reduction...not the zeolites.

the pumping is to release them from the media and into the water column ensuring a supply of bacteriplankton to further eat up nutrients, feed corals, and be exported via skimming.

the wording is iffy here and there, i personally attribute it to translation issues and marketing.... but the science is there to back this stuff up...as are the results.

it's much more than inventing the wheel.

Well I'd use the skimmer if it worked well. And I agree with supply and demand but I'm surprised people will drop that much cash on it. Like I said, there is always a sucker :). I'll stick with my ASM G3 which skims great for me and my corals are just as colorful or more then any of the other tanks who spend 4 to 5 times as much on a skimmer.

not to defend KZ, i do feel it's high priced...but many experienced reefers with some of the best tanks are testing it out and giving it rave reviews...that says something. there are very few people in the world that have corals as colorful as some of those testers.

and no offense, but an ASM is not at that level. for what you get with those, they're overpriced too.

'Some of the best tanks' and 'very few people in the world' makes me nervous.

Somehow the massive amounts of gunk my ASM pulls isn't good enough?

While there are some people who are Zeo fans, there are a lot of people who are skeptical. I have seen too many good looking tank that don't use Zeo to feel that it is a holy grail of reefing. :D

Well, I honestly don't see how that skimmer can do any better for my tank then it is already. Here are some of my colors I achieve with a G3 on a 180 which many considered underpowered. I get good gunk out of it and I have a decent bioload as well with around 18 fish.

I think anyone can achieve a good nice tank just by providing good husbandry. These shots are about 5 months old. All the xenia is gone and I have another vortech. I used to run 3 Seios which worked just fine however I wanted a cleaner look.
