I prefer to have one decent sized tank and multiple smaller tanks. For my main reef, I choose a 120g because I wanted something at least 2' wide. I also have a 20g frag tank, 20g anemone tank, 10g zoanthid tank, and 10g mushroom tank plumbed together with it. Here is a link to my setup if you want some ideas:

Matter of fact, just saw a 96"x48"x30" 600 gallon tank that is lighted by 3 lumenarcs. :P Here's a picture:

I had a 240 for 15 years Was easy to maintain. so I built a pond 2500 gal. now I have a 90 It's more work. but the lighting cost is reasonable
