i have this "friend" in alabama who is considering putting up another tank. this "friend" has a great tank already, but just wants a project to work on for the next 4-6 months or so in his garage. for those of you who have had several sized tanks, what was your FAVORITE size, as far as ease of bio-stability, water change ease (he dosn't want anything that is going to warrent HUGE water changes to make a dent in things), and ability to keep lots of cool things.

this "friend" has had tanks from 10-75 so far, and seems to be leaning toward a 120 or maybe even a 210 for his next project, but wanted to see what my friends here thought.

any suggestion for my "friend" ?

ok... greater than 150? and if so .. why>

If I had a house - I'd totally go bigger - drop everything to the basement. Noise reduction! And water overflow/floods would go to a sump drain of some sort.

Why? Looks for one. You can add more critters and you're safe from the tang police. But I've been under the impression that they are abit more stable from ph and temperature changes.

IMO, of course. 8)

The only size I've had that I count as a tank (I had a nano for a few months, but really as a holding tank which I fiddled with to make look nice) was 90g. Pretty nice size in terms of what you can do. 3'x2'x2'

I've been getting frags from local reefers lately and the best tanks I've seen are about 150-180 gallons. It's large enough to have many options for fish and enough real estate for multiple colonies.

SnowManSnow,
IMO bigger is better. You have an easier time with the water control and fish tend to be territorial.

I sure do like my 120 but will eventually build a 180 in its place just for the extra two feet of viewable real estate.

180G is probably my favorite size too, although I ended up buying a 210G and I'm happy! :D Longer tanks need to be taller and wider not to look funny to me (like the 240G in 8'x2'x2').

If you are going to upgrade like that go with a 225 short. Same length and heigt as a 180, but 30 inches wide. My 150 is 26" wide and believe it or not the 2 inches makes a big difference. I wish the wife would have agreed to the 30" wide tank I wanted

I would go a bit longer and wider than a 120 but stay to being able to light with two lights. Some thing around 54" long and 30" wide.

i'd want something on the wide side myself.

i've had a 29, 30, 75, 125, and now a 200.
all of the previous tanks were purchased in that order, and the quest for extra space continues

I went big previously (180). Too much work and expense. I can get just as much joy from my 92 gal cube right now. I did build a frag tank for grow out, but you can do that for cheap. The ONLY way I would do a larger tank at this point would be if I wanted to get larger fish.

Good point.. with around 50 by 30.. the lighting thing can get expensive a lot faster than most other initial costs. 2 lights would be doable...

thanks for bringing that up :)
