Um.. still looks hacked to me. I am no longer a member there, so I go to reefcentral.com, and I get the vBulletin message with the bit about libel and slander. Has someone locked them out of their own site now?

Sorry for the interruption. We'll be back in a little while, I need to check something.

To the folks spreading rumors and making up quotes, it's pretty sad when you have to resort to lying to try and get members.

The truth is that during an upgrade to mySQL we encountered an error that needed to be corrected. Unlike most sites, our database is very large and routine checks can take quite a long time to run. That's one of the reasons why we're one of the few sites that runs a full nightly backup. We'll be back this morning with virtually zero data loss. Sorry to disappoint the folks forging the emails.

Slander and libel are pretty serious things.

Good to hear the info isn't lost. They really botched the announcements. If they had posted proper notice to members about the scheduled upgrade and made detailed announcements on their homepage when they went down, all this would not be discussed

Now the real mystery is reefbuilders' quotes.

Wow that happened fast. I don't really read on reefcentral as much as I used to. I come to RDO everyday and check the new threads and move on to other interest. RC for me is a place to sell stuff lol.

As the editor of Reef Builders I take personal responsibility for not being more critical about the comments as we received them. At the time of our first posting about the situation, RC had been down for almost 24hrs. I have been a member of RC since 2001 and I can't remember a time when they were completely down. I sincerely apologize for disseminating false information and I can assure you that it was not intentional. We take great pride in the accuracy of our posts and I can assure you we will be doubly diligent about this kind of sensitive material in the future.

On another note, it was disgusting to see the vultures swoop in and try to promote their forum when this was all going down. We are actively trying discover the origin of the false information and although we have tracked it down to the server level (which can be accessed from anywhere), it is unlikely we will be able to go beyond that.

Regarding your second paragraph: For the admins of these communities, this is a business. IMO, I see nothing wrong taking advantage of another business' failure or shortcomings (whether they are still in business or not) to differentiate and/or promote your business. The inaccurate information really wasn't their fault. This is nothing like preying on widows or orphans. Again, just my two cents.

I wonder if Reefbuilders will provide verification for their quotes. I, along with everyone else, accepted it as accurate.

IMO, they quoted comments in another RC is down "article", which was pretty silly to do unless they looked at the IP logs and knew what Beerguy and mhurley, etc's IP's were.

We all make mistakes. They acknowledged it, apologized, and will take steps to insure it doesn't happen again. That's good enough in my book. If I suspected some nefarious intent, I'd have a different opinion. But I read and have come to respect Reefbuilder's blog over the years, and I would be shocked if there was any malice.
