LET THE BUYER BEWARE (?CAVEAT EMPTOR?) OF MARINE DEPOT "DEAL"- JBJ 28G HQI W/STAND

Dearest MF Members,
I am writing to inform you of my recent experience with Marine Depot.

I recently purchased the JBJ Nano Cube 28g that came with a ?free stand?. Previous to purchasing this product I contacted Marine Depot, because I wanted to be sure that I was purchasing a brand new aquarium and stand since the deal seemed too good to be true. The representative assured me that everything was brand new and the stand was a promotional deal they had with JBJ. Hence my christmas gift oder was made.

My husband and I just opened the packaging which contained the stand and we were appalled to see the shape it was in.

The stand was absolutely filthy and you could see NUMEROUS SCRATCHES ON THE STAND. Not just little knicks, but HUGE SCRATCHES all along the outside of the stand. Moreover, the stand clearly has markings as if it was once assembled and used for some period of time.

Furthermore, ONE OF THE REQUIRED CABINET PANELS IS MISSING ALONG WITH MULTIPLE HARDWARE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This set up was not cheap!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It was $562!!!!!!

I haven?t even opened the packaging for the tank yet! I?m scared to see what I?ll find in the box because it?s beat up!

The fact that marine depot permitted such a poor product to leave its facility speaks to its customer service and its reputation. Previously I sent emails informing various reef forums about this deal. But now I would recommend that individuals not spend their hard earned money on products offered by this establishment.

The sad fact remains that I can?t begin setting up my system and I recently purchased some wonderful live rock which has been cured!!!!!


Do anyone have any advice about maintaining my live rock?????????

I contacted MD but they were closed. They will be expecting a call from me first thing in the morning. My husband just spent significant time repackaging the item and I didn't think about taking pics. I guess we should have taken pics..............

the tank package could have been drop shipped from JBJ, MD might not have never seen it. either way I'd give them a chance to fix the problem. they are an honest company as bad coffee said. It's disappointing though so I understand your frustration.

Hello Everyone,
Here is a status update.

I opened the package containing the tank. Sad to say that the tank had a scratch on the inside bottom panel of glass that was readily visible. It is apparent that this defect in the tank was known previous to its arrival at my residence, because a piece of tape was affixed over the scratch at issue.


I did speak to a customer service rep from Marine Depot earlier today.

In short: he stated that he couldn?t put in a replacement order for me for because a Manager wasn?t there. I would have to wait until Monday. Thus, I requested that the Manager give me a call so we could discuss the various issues that I had with this order.

The rep mentioned that MD would more than likely have their carrier pick up the items at their cost, but we will see.

Moreover, he was supposed to send me an email within 10-20 mins documenting that the order was rejected within the company?s specified time frame. Unfortunately, hours passed and he never sent such email. As a result, I had to sit here and draft an email documenting our conversation and rejection of the goods in an effort to maintain my right to return the products.

My utter disappoint is in the fact that previous to purchasing this product I spoke to MD?s customer service department and they assured me that said items would be absolutely new, unused, and not refurbished. Yet, both products were in poor condition.

I?ll keep you all abreast of the situation.

DFS has the same deal and it's $499 plus shipping so tell them that you don't want it and get it from the DFS. Their customer service is way superior to any other ones.

In my past dealings I have always found MD to be a standup business. While I have never ordered anything as major as you, I regularly order supplies like B-ionic 2 part and TWP cartridges. They have even gone so far as to call me on my cell phone when things were out of stock, or had to be substituted (at no extra cost).

the thing about those stands is they are packaged by JBJ and most vendors don't open the boxes and inspect them prior to sending them out..im sure they won't have a problem just sending a new stand:)
