I have met some really, really cool people from here and have had nothing but great experiences. I like that I can actually learn from others here and pass that on to others that are just learning and starting. Before I became a member I knew nothing about keeping a reef, yeah saltwater fish, I always had that. I did not know what a zoa was or a candy cane for that matter, but I did learn it from this site. I purchased my first corals from Alex Pescado and he spent time explaining to me, my first candycane from Brendan(Chief)(which BTW is doing fantastic), my first blue tubs from Phil(Dev)(which is also doing fantastic). I asked all these guys questions, it might have been stupid ones, but they did not mind me picking there brains and answering them honestly. Now I am starting to get into the sps stuff, never in my life did I think I would even get to this level. So it is important for me to know that I could ask questions that might be stupid or not and not feel like an idiot and not get a dumb as remark.

well, i can how a new member can be afraid to ask questions. it's like being in a classroom and being afraid to ask a question when you think everyone else in the class understand whats going on. i've felt that way before on this website when i first joined, i still feel this way sometimes.

the thing that gets senior members upset, i think, is the laziness of some new members. it gets a bit sickening answering the same 5 beginner questions over and over again. deanos used to say this all the time, "use the Search button!" There is a ton of information already asked and answered. It actually takes less time using the search button to look through stuff, then it is to start a new thread and refresh every 3 seconds for a post. Back to the classroom analogy, if you don't know whats going on, just open up the textbook first, and if you still can't find the answer, then ask the question.

On good days, I'll chime in on questions I feel a new member could easily find. On bad days, I just ignore it because I'm impatient. There shouldn't be a reason to bash or be mean, unless someone is really asking for it.

I also appreciate Cali's presence on the board. He's among the members here whose answers are matter-of-fact and thoughtful --- and he doesn't sugar-coat his comments.

I normally try not to respond to these kind of posts, but I must say - if you are worried about drama, then why write the kind of post that will only add fuel to the fire? What exactly does this post seek to accomplish? That is not meant to be an insult, but genuine food for thought. Personally, I just try to set an example of how I want to be treated in my treatment of others.

I thought the same thing when I read this post.

Sometimes I think, like what if my nuts are Ronald Reagan. The timeline is off but they look similar. Plus ladies love my nuts, and ladies loved Ronald Reagan, at least so I'm told. Personally I don't get it. Elvis I get, Robert Redford I get, even Brad Pitt makes sense but I doubt your wrinkly old grandma was thinking of Ronald Reagan when she was getting down.

I also think it kinda sucks that when I post some information about losing fish or some other less desirable aspect of this hobby, and I get very few individuals empathizing in the room, but my pm box is full of people with the same issue. We know we;ve all been there, so lets take a deep breath, get over ourselves and our equipment. We can all use the search button and google, but not quite as reinforcing as getting live feedback from someone who you can see the results of their knowledge.

I am definitly one of the repetative "ich" and "reefsafe" question askers, and trust me I google for hours before and after a response but love live feedback and If I know the one responding is experienced it gives me confidence in the decision. I also know how bad it sux to lose a lot of fish due to a poor decision, so I dont mind chiming in on same old questions for newer newbies.

And if we look back at everyone of our original threads, we can find something stupid, redundent or just something that could have been found via "search", but c'mon thats why im on this site so much, its entertaining and informative. So c'mon lets just enjoy this and not stress the small stuff.

jl i totally agree, yes alot of the same questions are asked , but there is always a varient to situations, equipt ect. people like to have their own question answered for their own question. and i have used the search button after scrolling through a ton of other post to not have the answer i am looking for i use to just ask. this is really to help the community. and alot of times it is hard to ask certain things in written words. thats why i have 3 peoples numbers that i can call and ask and explain easier that way most of the time's. i enjoy this site and my reef has become what it is in thanks to finding this forum, plus nice to have people that are close to you that actually might be able to come help out

Keeping a successful reef tank is not an easy task. It is extremely difficult and possibly impossible if one defines "successful" as reproductively mature like I do (i.e. fish spawning, corals spawning, rapid and colorful growth, no algae, etc.........).

Many dogma's are not true. Many fads don't work. Husbandry varies between many successful reefkeepers.

THEREFORE, everybody must ask as many questions as possible all the time. It is the only way to become better, IMO.

i can see both sides on this issue. this is the reason why i think we have forums divided into different catergories. for the beginners, they have a section where they can post n when i read those, i have it in my mind to be a lot more patience n tolerance due to the fact they may not know much on reefing. on days i dont feel that way or the patience, i would not bother even reading them.

on the issue of advice being ignore, i would not sweat it. i see it as its their lost.
