My mysid and pods co exist in quantity.

They may eat each other's eggs and babies which I cannot see nor prove but by the population in the tank, I am sure they will work out naturaly.

The mysid colony expaned to the DT over time, and they can improve your natural food source by a lot.

How much of an area do they need to keep reduction by cannibalism to a minimum.

I wish I knew. I can tell you that in a 10 gallon and a 20 gallon sized tank, I was only able to house a small number of mysis. I tried culturing as many as I could to feed seahorses. In the tanks mentioned previously, it seemed that I could only expect to have about 10-20 adult mysis at any given time (and that was the best of times).

I wanted to look into culturing them again but the links I found explained a process that I could not engage in at this time. I'll post the links as I have them saved somewhere.

A good place to search or inquire for information is http://www.mblaquaculture.com/. Paul Sachs (http://www.aquaculturestore.com/info/index.html) may also be very helfpul. I'm not sure if he cultures his own though.

Hi Dom,

I have a 45g seahorse set up now. Took a trip this past Sunday to the Brooklyn Aquarium and noticed their culture of mysis for the seahorses (one of my favorite displays, the mysis culturing tank that is). Looked like they had a 15 gallon with just a bunch of sponge filters. I am thinking they have another, non-display culture, but am wondering if it is possible to "harvest" before the go cannibal.

I also wanted to ask you, I know that you have kept the octo. successfully with the horses, what would you say to a purple reef lobster with the horses, or what might be another crustacean alternative. P.S. Your tank looks great.

I am more lucky then, with a 9G refugium (5G water filled) I get around 30+ adults if I feed the refugium phyto.

My guess would be they are pulling the adults from that tank before cannibalism. I'm not 100% sure though. I've only discussed my thoughts and experience. I'm sure there are methods not listed publicly. You should ask the aquarium what they do. It would be interesting to know.

As far as the purple reef lobster, I wouldn't risk it. I've kept them before only to learn how aggressive they are and suucessful at landing meals. They will kill and eat whatever they can. I don't think they would mess with seahorses but I wouldn't take the risk. I would go with cleaner shrimp. Just like the standard fish, I noticed seahorses getting a good cleaning. :tub:

Thank you for the tank props!

dr foster and smith sells live adult mysis, have gotten them before from them, i tried to keep them myself with no luck they lasted about a week in a 10g with some rock and a sponge filter, was feeding phyto and put a little selcon in also to help gut load them, my fish loved them and my seahorse thought it had steak dinner

I must be lucky. I must have 100's in my fuge and have no idea how they got there. One thing I've noticed is that the number of pods in my fuge has dropped.

Are you sure they are mysis and not juvenile peppermint shrimp or cleaner shrimp? I have a ton of mysis shrimp in my DT hidden within the rocks but my sump/fuge only has a handful. My fuge is 40 gallons. What size is yours?

BTW, that is awesome if they are mysis shrimp!
