BTJ's has a history of trouble. Besides burning down the original location, there was some drama with a primate they had a few years ago. They used to have a really nice setup about 15 years ago..... although they were selling Spider Monkeys.:irked:

If there are reptiles that need to be relocated let me know I will post on the gecko board see if peeps there can hold them.

You can also let me know as I'm not too far and raise quite a few reptiles and amphibians. I've passed the store a few times and thought of going in but never did. Maybe next time I will just to see what they say if I ask abou the conditions.

OMG, I was at BTJ also a few weeks ago and decided I will never go back there. They were selling short hair kittens for 125.00 each. That makes me sick, How could any petstore sell kittens that are given away for free every single day and are put down in every shelter every day. Also their Fish tanks looked sick, The corals where bleached, their were some dead mice in there mice display. They had about 100 Bull frogs in a 30 gallon Bucket. That is what REALLY upset me. They all looked so unhappy. My partner and I walked out of the store and said we would never go back there ever again.

I really hope someon can do something about this. Something has to be done. If there is anything I can do let me know.

Can someone say if there's any rigmarole that pet store owners have to go through to keep exotics like marine fish? It seems far too easy for just anyone who's selling animals to decide to sell marine fish on top of that, especially if they're chain stores.

Update - my friend is out till friday so I am gonna make some calls today and see what numbers I can come up with to call. As for everyone close to that store, I highly recommend you call the local gov. and health depts. and start complaining as it wont hurt.

Ok we have the info, hopefully this will help. Can someone provide the stores address and phone number so we can fill this out. It would be a shame to start this thread, get this much interest and have coop do all this work to give us something to use and not use it.

Also it is important to realize that people reporting should have directly seen the neglected care of the animals. If you heard about it from someone that does not count.

Not sure if anyone said this or not, but you can call your local ASPCA to report them as well. I used to work in a pet store that sold all types of animals including dogs, and people would see a dog in a cage with poop and call the ASPCA right away. Withing a day, an inspection agent would be in the store checking things out.

That's the thing though...people will come out in droves to protest mistreatment of cats and dogs, but far fewer will complain about the mistreatment of fish, let alone be able to recognize it. Even if someone from one of those animal protection agencies did come by to check out the tanks, it's possible that the manager could still get by them by insisting that their conditions are suitable enough (after all, the fish are alive). I don't have high hopes about things improving by filling out that form, but it may be worth the effort to at least try to get something done. It would help if a lot of us sent in a complaint, but since a large number of us haven't seen the store for ourselves, it may still be disregarded.

I filled form out also.
I went on suffolk county dept. of heath website but could not figure otu how to make a complaint. I will cal tomorrow and get info on how to do that.
Believe me , i deal with these people all the time. They mean buisness.
And this place has crazy roaches and mold, and im sure they have more than a few violations.
Then they come back quickly to make sure you staighten it out.
Eventually you play by the rules or dont play at all.
Can you imagine what the behind the scenes looks like in this place!!!

I'm glad people have raised concerns about BTJ's. Last time I was in there it was before the fire. I went into the back section and the place reeked! Water on the floor, tanks with algae coding the glass, frogs packed in one tanks and stepping all over each other....
In addition, they had an alligator there for show. It appeared that it can barely make a 360 degree turn inside it's tank.
