Very cool. Mother nature never seems to dissapoint. Many people believed the sharks were harboring sperm from male encounters in the wild even if the last contact was many years ago. The DNA test in this case confirms that is not the case.

Virgin birth isn't that bad.

Nothing like making a shark in the mother of christ. The very idea of "virginity" is strictly a human concept. In no other organism would an individual wait to procreate for any reason other than inability to find a mate. I understand why they do it - it's to grab the attention of readers/watchers. But it is a pet peeve that has come from having to sit through too many documentaries on primates (where all of the anthropomophizing is ten times worse) and trying to make my students understand that they can't project all of their human emotions onto monkeys.

Hi ellebelle ;-)
Your absolutely right and I feel something similar whenever I talk about earth history and the fact that we Humans, are a very recent species and that we were not here all the time...well some people look at me with a some what funny face/look...but this is the result of our upbringing for the most part, Humans as centre of the universe...and the media grab that to maximize sales as they know people will pay attention if subjects are anthropomorphized...so they do it...but yes it should be explained. I for instance don't like to see that this animal or that is a killer this or killer that, because animals act on instinct to get food or defend a territory and not ill intended or deliberately intended just for the killing, well not like humans any way.

Cheers
Pedro Nuno ;-)

pretty much all predators are capable of intelligent thought. Think about is which is smarter the rabbit or the fox. They say it is in the eyes. Eyes on front = intelligent. eyes on side = not so much. The fox must outwit the rabbit and contemplate its next move where the rabbit just runs. not much thinking involved. But sharks are just straight up killing machines. Born to kill. doesnt mean they are evil or bad, but what they where intended to be. respect im out

Having the eyes rotated to the front of the body is correlated with intelligence but probably not CAUSED by intelligence.

Having the eyes rotated to the front of the body give you depth perception. Depth perception is good if you are going to employ any kind of jumping as part of your locomotor repertoire. Two of the theories for why primates have eyes rotated to the front are: (1) to judge gaps between branches; and (2) to grasping small mobile prey items, like insects. Cats have eyes rotated to the front for similar purposes - judging jumping distances for locomotion and for prey. A lot of prey animals have sidewards facing eyes to give a larger field of vision to scan for predators. It doesn't always work though as dolphins have are highly intelligent with a large brain to body ratio and eyes that are entirely sideways facing. I would guess depth perception is less of a selective pressure in the water.

Regardless, all of those things have to do with mammals. Fish have a very different body plan than mammals and have evolved for different selective pressures. So I guess I don't agree with the premise of your argument.

What about a pack of wolves, or a school of dolphins, etc.I can see your point but you missed the big picture, i am not talking about swinging between trees. I am talking about that which allows the proverbial strong to survive. That "killer instinct". But than again intelligence is in the eye of the beholder. maybe you may not agree that most predators retain intelligence doesnt make it true. throughout history you notice through the process of evolution that creatures today who are called intelligent are descendants of predators. including the illustrious mankind. thank you.

There is also a lizard that does that, except the males have gone completely extinct. The females do do a form of courtship with each other to stimulate reproduction but there is no exchange of DNA.

As for ellebelle's big word.

Yes, it is annoying, I agree. The media is probably one of the most frustrating things out there for a variety of reasons.

Or perhaps the word virgin has just become a commonly used word to describe anything w/out sexual interaction...or lacking alchohol :D Does it bother you that beverages have been anthropomophized? :D

I personally did not know the term had anything to do with christ. I just assumed the term was used even before the birth of christ.

Very cool about the shark
