Copper And Live Rock

I Had Ich In My Fish Only Tank 6 Months Ago With About 50lbs Of Live Rock. I Paniced And Added Copper Without Taking The Live Rock Out. Well The Ich Is Gone And The Live Rock Is Now Not Live. My Nitrite Levels Had Been A Little High. Could I Get Live Rock Now And Add To Tank Or Is Copper Always In Tank And It Will Kill It To ? My Copper Level Is Zero Because I Also Have Done About 12 Water Changes Since Then And Tested It. I Always Here Once You Add Copper You Have It Forever. Is This True Because I Am Buying A Xl Puffer This Weekend And Trying To Get My Levels Perfect But Since I Killed The Live Rock Its Been Hard.
Ps Fish Are Very Hardy That I Have Now And There Is No Effect On Them But Since I Am Buying A $300 Puffer I Am Concerned.

I think the jury is still out on whether the addition of copper is a 'forever' problem. Differening opinions out there on this topic...
Why not get some poly pads and see how fast they turn color. Also Seachem makes a product that supposedly removes copper from tanks.
Are there any living inverts in the tank?

Your live rock absorbed lots of copper and it will leach out over time.

For fish only? You don't need to just run carbon and change it out over time. Just keep in mind that many inverts are intolerant of copper in their water and will die if put in the tank.

your best bet for takin out copper would b to take out n not use the copper infected LR n anything else like sand,etc. leave the tank empty n run poly filter pads n carbon for a few days.

if this tank is just Fish only, i dont see a reason to do anything unless you wanted to go FOWLR

The product Kathy is referring to is called Cuprisorb and it does work wonderfully. I coppered my tank a couple of months ago and have used cuprisorb and poly filter pads since I added the copper. The poly filters no longer turn colors and all the readings from my copper tests are 0.

In the future don't use the old type of copper. There are a few new copper based meds that are much less stressful to the fish, but more deadly to ich. Cupramine is one of them, and it is easily removed by carbon. Get a good copper test kit. Do the water changes as stated and as long as you are not adding snails or shrimps your copper tainted rocks will be ok.

To remove the copper pick up some cuprisorb.

I treated my fowlr with "CopperSafe" last year without removing my lr due to stupid me taking advice that I KNEW was wrong. Killed all the bioload and paid a heavy price for that mistake. But now the tank has finally recovered. I added lr from my reef tank, loaded with polyps and they are still thriving. I also threw in there a leather that I've had for about a year in my reef that never openned and it is trying to open now.
