In all my journeys with pet shops & aquarium stores ,even if I know the workers, owners or not ,When an animal is being killed or suffering ,"I WILL BRING IT TO YOUR ATTENTION". or have the animal taken away ! While doing my usual run to fish stores I came across "FishTown" and found something that's gets me twisted regarding reef care.I know a guy that works there and if he was in I would have remedy the problem. They have two huge pieces of Dendhro ,one orange & one yellow with multiple heads . They have them for sale at $699.99 for each.I payed $59 for one head and treat it better than my wife sometimes, from what she say's :tongue1:.If you see them in store now ,there almost dead.I offered to take home and bring them back to health, then they can frag or sell the whole colony.I read a article about Fishtown and agree two wrongs don't make a right .personally IMO the shop is foul with bad oders all around the tanks. Every fish purchased there has expired for some unknown reason,I'm guessing cyanide cause there eaten from inside out and look healthy all around ,They just stop eating after a while. Six close friend's with tanks have the same problem and one came home with the hardest anthius to keep, they told him, it's a hardy fish from there private stock. You don't sell a newbie a rare hard to keep fish and expect them to return for more.I keep thinking about this coral after watching a friends email about a Dog that was hit by a car ,then another dog came, It rescued the other dog from another car running over it again on highway.I went after a Petland employee and received 1 year probation for finding a poor ferret with a broken back being abused .I also took the ferret with the cop, and payed to have it put down so no more suffering.Mister macho here went home and squeezed my own ferret and cried a few tears. When someone offers to help and all I got was a laugh from fishtown ,after trying to rescue that Coral I loved so much. Can anyone tell me a adult way when I come across animal abuse how to react...I just see red ,swing ...then say I'm sorry......I watched one jerk in city walk a dog off the curb, to see a cab squish it right in front of me ...I went crazyon him, cause I'm not a big guy and he was three time bigger.I ran circles around him then took off.I felt bad for going off on him and even more terrible that I witness that. :scratchch ya know ? if it was a person ,I could have ate that night and went to sleep.the sound the dog made had me shaking all night. When I was younger ,my friend who works at Fishtown had worked at another pet shop on LIE service road in bayside. As a teen growing up ,I was hanging out with friends behind the stores and showed off by how I could open the door of petshop without alarm going off.I could go to fishtown and remove the coral but your talking 25 to 30 years ago. I'd be peeing my pants the whole time trying something like that .I haven't been in trouble for over 30 years and we know it's not worth it, but let me tell you ,The thought of the corals has passed my mind at least 20 times today and I don't have ADP or compulsive disorders .Any advice would go a long way.I still get little things from fishtown and other stores like petco ect...but like watching TV ,if you don't like what you see 'Change the Channel.I'm no winner myself but I know right and wrong and when mother nature or innocent animals are fu#ked with I don't swallow to easy ,I'll eat sh#t once and a while to not have a confrontation but shovels full get me bent outta shape easy when regarding pets and wild animals.I got a kick out of my 12yo daughter today .There's this ally rabbit garage cat next door to Arby's on service road of LIE and Utopia. She feeds a can of food every time we head to arbys.the cat howls and it's not friendly, but to her .she had to test the water anyway..thery are now pals and she wants me to drag this thing home... I'm not perfect and still like the guys in my journeys to marine shops , I just wish it was run better for the sake of the animals," Not The Oh Mighty Dollar" ! Man ,What I could do with $699.99......It wouldn't be chasing a little white ball around like golf...that's for sure ! See what I do for animals ,I've never typed this much in my whole life...as you can tell by me way of so eloquently speaking..Any help ......PLEASE !

lol Terry it's all good man. I completely feel you and I am glad you didn't see them acclimating... which I have...

Listen some of the guys at fishtown like (1 or 2) actually care about the stuff in there but are pressured by the boss.... I am sure you've seen him before.

Really man, there's nothing you can do about it except aiding in a few different ways and on a bigger scale. Helping/volunteering at shore clean ups, aquariums, and other charitable ways to help save the world's reefs so that .... 1. Prices will come down and 2. we can continue this bloody expensive hobby. That's my view on things.

I still can't believe you punched an employee LOL. I guess the best thing you can possibly do is what you did... offer to help save it and what not. Granted they wouldn't have given it to you without some form of collateral. Anyway, as I said before with fishtown I wasn't kidding. What SHOCKS me the most is they have been in business so long and they are able to offer these prices because of their longevity and big order volume.

Here's whats crazy. My friend who was in the hobby and has been out for a year stopped by to check it out and said their livestock is much better taken care of now (what a shocker). It's really about the management and how much they care.

Essentially... you can't do much from this end =X. And don't worry about typing eloquently the fact that you care shows you are a high class act... and seriously... it's an online forum who cares (although I'll admit I hate certain spelling errors).

If I can take it today and gladly pay you on Tuesday !:tongue1: you don't want me running a pet shop .I had a lady come back in with two dead crickets pointing her finger at me screaming " I want 10 cents credit" What do you think I told her ? then A bunch of guys robbed my store with guns waiving in my face, and the boss wanted everyone to take a pollygraph, and to give him the plate number of the getaway car......Right..... so they can come back the next day and shoot me at the counter.I don't have to work and enjoy the outdoors ...I wouldn't want to fix something that "AINT BROKE" .....I got a good thing going on and don't take it for granted .I retired at 35 and been shopping ever since .If I had to go the same place two days in a row with a finger in my face saying your late "Again" I'd be living in a refrigerator box.working for a boss is one of my weaker points and owning and directing staff ...huh ...first nice day .....company picinick ...ya got the day off ! Thanks for the offer and didn't know he's hurting, with the economy also.Stinks buying on line where you can't put your hands on what you buy.My RC hobby along with landsailing & kite surf/buggying has shops closing all across the country. All this wealth & Knowledge and even the staten Island ferry's tank cant keep stuff alive. We need one "FABULOUS" reef store even if for 5 Burroughs.....Ny is supposed to be the best and worst this world has to offer right !.......OK, I'll buy it and you run it ...........oh yeah ....it's a fishy Friday ....you got the day off....Remember ,Monday is rubber ducky day so bring your galosh's.:tongue1:

Terry, I was there and saw the Dendros as well it is a dam shame !! I told them they look like crap(not so nicely) and told em I have 3 heads that are huge !! they asked if the tentacles only came out at night I said umm no all day ..then they asked me in a round about way how to feed em ..I told them but I dont really think they had a real interest anyways...Then when I said cmon frag me a few they were like for 700.00 you can have the whole thing ...unreal I cannot tell you how many clams they have sold me in the past and said sure you can keep it under pc just leave it in the sand....I must have lost at least 6-8 clams in my past experiences with them ...and numerous plating corals as well and about 30 fish ...the list goes on and on!!!then to top it off after 5 years of going there they have the balls to try and charge me for overflow plumbing that comes with the tank!

Ah ..the Oh Mighty Dollar......Yes clams with parasite's and fish when put in great water conditions thrive with little critters.luckly I've only had fish loss and could'nt figure out why, when everyone bought elsewhere was with me for years.they use to be on 34th street, and same there.funny story there .I was looking at fish when I came across a giant snakehead in a fairly large tank.On the glass was a sign saying .do not look strait at me or startle me while in glass tank.....A few girls were reading when this guy went behind the tank with a hose and let out a roar.I never seen girls run so fast, almost threw the glass door at the same time. Some staff are cool but professional and care is most important in any bizz.I'm waiting for them to instaul one of those number ticket machines, cause you can wait on weekends. I'm no winner and far from perfect ,there's nice staff in places and they get abused too, but as an "OWNER" why do something "Half Ass" ....it shows lack of charicter or hygene....or ..... just Greed......anyhoo my grip is the same as you just seen ...700 hundred for something there killing and I can't do anything to save it from dying...screw the money or profit .it was a beautiful living thing they killed. Most overflow kits come in a seperate box so they always try to hustle ya unless it's glued in already........ then they try with the fittings.:tongue1:

Can anyone tell me a adult way of when I come across animal abuse how to react...

That was a long post and I almost stopped reading when I came to 'fishtown'.
I have no good answer for animal abuse, other than to say if you see it and can stop it, then do so anyway you have to.
As for fishtown, it's not going to change and I wish people would stop spending money there.

Forgive me but I am just a bit confused by this above... I completely understand your frustration with seeing aquatic life suffering. Though it happens often, in our own tanks as well as those in a LFS(doesn't make it right.. but it is a reality we all have faced numerous times). It brings to mind for me the question At what cost are we willing to continue with this hobby, and what can each individual do to make changes for the better involving the impact their role in this hobby takes on natural wildlife? ..

What I don't understand though... is how with such passion as you seem to have displayed in your responses that you are able to befriend someone that works with/sells mill puppies.

As in anything else in life, perception is everything. There are places that we do not shop at, because the practices at the establishments as a whole I personally do not agree with. I know others do shop at certain ones of them. It's okay to me simply because their perception isn't mine.

We all do what we can with what we have available to us. As long as we aren't sacraficing of ourselves what we consider ethical treatment of living creatures and our moral fiber isn't compromised in participating in this hobby, to our own degree...as long as it works out beneficial in the end it could be seen as a great success.

There are a laundry list of animal problems stemming from human impact and their incessant greed. Though I believe that if each individual takes one small step daily to improve animal welfare either through educating another, not shopping at a place that doesn't practice animal care (that includes not buying dry goods as well, or spending a penny in such establishments) that it will change gradually overtime.

I have met far too many people that "rescued" that cute puppy in the window or that fish from the tank that was suffering. LEAVE IT THERE! If it remains there will be no other space for the proprietors of the business to fill. No other dog to be added from a mill, no other fish to be taken the way in which it shouldn't. The cycle will only end when we stop enabling these things to occur.

I am glad to hear Im not the only one willing to call people out on things like that. I also agree dont shop there and tell everyone you can not to shop there. I am done with places that sell crap and have 0 ethics and I tell em so and never go back.

Well sometimes but just to remind them they suck and waste thier time with questions they can't answer. I like to see how long I can keep a straight face.

I have to say , "Well Put" .and when I say things like buddy .....I don't always mean a dear friend....maybe a casual acquaintance. When I realize something not sitting well with me ...I complain then make a change ...as for "FISHTOWN" ...I realize they are no longer getting my contribution in any form thanks to the way you explained .I will leave it there .I shouldn't really say my other acquaintance is runnig a puppy mill ,just that all those cute little puppys come from somewhere .I'm not aware of how he gets them but from reading about mills ,they can't be to different with caging and the freedom they need, minus the vet care. Thanks for pointing out about mills. Like Kieth said ,Bad Karma and it will effect them in future.Theres dear Friends and then theres people you have to work around, either you like them or don't .I take's "ALOT" for me not to like someone .

I stopped by today but not to buy anything. I just wanted to pick a bone with the guy & owner, about what I've read & see with my own eyes. From what I was told from my pal,.... was.... "Don't waste your breath" .The owner want's to do things his way and everytime I say something to better something ,he's bitches about money...ect......I see now ,even some staff thinks he's a joke, It's a shame the staff can't take pride in there effort & work, along with being snuffed everytime they want to make things better for the shop.....Ah ....I'm done feeling sorry for owners, another notch on my dispicable behaivour list.:irked:

Please dont take this the wrong way, but reading your post is very painful - not because of what you are saying but because how you are saying it. Please go and edit it so it reads like English and then we can come back and do a group hug.
