ok, so on saltwaterfish.com i saw flame scallops and cleaner clams for sale, anyone here ever kept or keeping any of these? and would they be a good pickup or waste of money
I managed to keep a flame scallop for 2 years in my 29g nano, but from what I hear that is not the norm. Unless you have an established tank with a lot of nutrients/microlife they typically die in about 3-6 months.
No experience with the "cleaner clams," though I'd guess they have similar requirements.
hi i have brought cleaner clams from them. They both lasted about 9 months and one morning the shells were open and the clam gone I think hermit crabs finished them off. IMO there not worth it
get the flame scallops from the carribean if you really want one, everything from indo-pacific is garbage, just like a lot of people mention, they'll die, its just a matter of time. Try croceam maximus, much better clams.
Crocea, maxima, and squamossa are the best to keep. If you do not have high wattage light go for the squamossa, they have cool patterns and all clams filter water in your aquarium, that is how they feed, along with photosynthesis.
Sorry ... but aren't the Flame Scallops native to the Caribbean?
In either case ... MOST of them don't do well ... a lot of people feel they are best left in the ocean (I have seen other boards rip people a new one for purchasing one of these ... for whatever reason they had) ... It's a difficult species to keep ... not for people new, or on the newer side to this hobby.
+x on the flame. Leave it alone. Those cleaner clams look like cherrystone taht you buy at the supermarket. Cold water clams that will survive a few months. You can get a bag of them for around $5 at the grocer. Place them on the sand and they will bury themselves in the sand. They won't last very long.
i just bought a flame scallop and wish that i had read this thread before i did. The guy at the LFS sold me some rotifers and said to feed it upstream twice a week.. we will see what happens. I have researched everything else i've put into my tank and bought this guy on a whim.
I had flame scallop before 5 years ago and i wont buy them again . They hide behind the rocks and you can put them up front all you want and there back behind the rock again . Dont buy them save you money.
