The scariest 2 points in the article I think are that A- this company as beerfish stated havent been way more severely punished- and due to that these morons are not changing their ways, they are kind of acting in my eyes like tough deal with it were gonna do what we want and well cleanup our messes the best we can each time that it happens and:
B- Australia is increasing its energy industry so this definately wont be the last time it happens there.

Hopefully the reef wont get destroyed because all of this. Although it may be one of those things that kids in the future will only be able to read about, not visit.

oh my god. i just saw "life" last night all on TGBR and how wonderful and protected it is. this is horrible. i dont think ANY boat should be aloud within a 2000 mile radios just because of something like this to prevent it from ever happening. i remember when i went to the british vergin islands, one of the islands, the tortola island has the nicest reef in that area and not one single boat is around near it within a 20 miles. when i went scubba diving to check it out we had to take a tortola boat and have them drop us off and thats the only boat that is aloud near it, and even that boat made us swim a good half mile to get to the biginning of it. the GBR is the most beautiful peice of the ocean and if something like this distroys it i swear im flying myself to the location and slapping the captin in the face for being so foolish.

This is one of the comments from that page, not mine:Is this true about the chemistry?

OH NO!!!! WE'RE ALL GONNA DIE!!! Wait! Take a deep breath. Crude oil seeps into the ocean every day through fissures in the ocean floor. This is not new phenomena, but, has been going on before man inhabited the earth. The ocean is so vast, it practically is self-cleaning. After the slicks break down into parts per milions (PPM) they become inert, or, unable to cause harm. Yes, spills happen, and yes, they do suck (at first). The animals that get caught in the slicks (the oil floats on top of the water), most likely birds and fish near the top of the water, eventually die. But, like everything else in nature, the strong survive, the rest of the species will mate and produce more offspring, and the numbers will return to normal.

Uh oh it's a rap for the barrier.. and to think I liked Cosco too..
Break out the super sized poly pads..
How do these people keep spilling oil??? Is it time for new ships or what???

I think the need new Captains in that Co. My grandpops was a captain for an international shipping company back in the day and transported the Pieta<- bad spelling? to the worlds fair from Italy- he never attended high school even(lied on his application to the MM academy)-- worked up through the ranks from lone shoreman to capt. he NEVER came close to running aground especially at top speed. Better training and stricter punishments.

That sucks, But then again everyone out there runs a great buisness and they are always honest right??? That won't affect much of the reef, it looked further away from the shore so it will not get washed up and hit the shallow reef. It looked like it was being contained.

Do you have any idea what you're talking about?

killing hundreds of years worth of marine life and devastating entire ecosystems

it's an easy million for them no doubt.

if only this weren't true, but it is - people are held for more on bail -

Zany, this is true, but those releases are not to the size nor targeted location - and typically happen at depths where this type fo sensative marine life doens't live - some of the animals at those depths are also more tolerant to that water polution and temps associated with the releases - the truth is it will bounce back, but not in our lifetime.

Larissa yes I do know what i'm talking about, unfortunately I deal with things like this everyday when Im at work. True I have been home for a year retired, but nonetheless I dealth with this type of stuff everyday. One crash will not kill the reef. Look at hawaii and all the ships sank at Pearl Harbor. Those shipd leak oil everyday for what close to 50 years now. There is still a reef there. The oil at the top will not damage much below 6 inches of water. The ship wreched part most likely hit the limestone part of the reef and not actual corals. The teams that deal with this will not let the coal go in. These teams that deal with this are highly skilled and trained and try to make everything very minimal as in loss. If the coal didn't spill in I doubt it will now. And yes I know exactly what I'm talking about.

This crash was a travesty, and can very possibly become a larger one if it's not contained (fingers crossed that it will be). Any minimization of it is deplorable. Making up facts to do so is deplorable.

And the fact that these morons were apparently TAKING A SHORTCUT? I'd like to flip the switch on them myself.

I doubt the chinese did any safety training or have any skills. That is usually the case, not just bad judgement

wow really, so chines people dont have any skills or safety training?? im confused if your in school for marine bilogy, you should know that all the reefs of the world are in serious jeopardy, an any crashes should be taken seriously and the possibilty of dumpig all the oil would be devistating...i think they should def have stricter policies on the protection of all marine life and expecially the reefs..
