LED Help

Ok. I'm thinking about taking the plunge into LEDs as opposed to Halides. I know that they cost A LOT, so while I'm trying to save, I figured I'd do some homework. Therefore, could someone attempt to explain how you'd go about outfitting a set up with LEDs. I have a 75 and a 210 that I would ultimately like to set up. Also, what are some of the benefits for switching to LEDs? Are there any downfalls? Any input would be appreciated. Thanks.

In my opinion led is a waste of money. In alot of forums people that bought led is selling them and going back to Halides and T5.Theres a reason sanjay doent us them on his sps tank.

I believe sanjay only didn't put the led's on his big tanks, probably because of the huge initial cost. He has smaller systems with LED's

I believe in a post on this site he was asked this question why he doesnt us it on his sps tank and he didnt answer. But he put them on his 2 or 3 other none sps tanks . I dont think money is a problem for him.

At this point its quite clear that LEDs
(1) can put out enough PAR to grow SPS, at a lower electrical consumption.
(2) Even if the output is lower than MH or T5, LEDs can put more light into the tank due to better directional control of the light
(3) On ones that have the ability to dim, various color combination can be achieved, but they still lack parts of the spectrum giving the tanks a "flat" look

What is not so clear, is
(1) what is the real long term life, light output decay, when used over a warm, humid salt environment
(2) what color the corals will develop, given the differences in spectrum
(3) can the current costs be justified - would depend on individual situations
(4) long term failure rates, ability to repair, service and warranty that will be available for these products.

PS. I can't stand looking at the all blue LEDs and the corals under them. It hurts my eyes, and takes my brain time to readjust to normal light.

Whether or not money is an issue, above is pro/cons he listed about LED's. So everybody can make their own decisions

I think its time to sell all your 20 LED fixtures warren and go back to MH.
And thats including the LED fixtures in your closet! :lol2:

batt, I think that it is a really broad generalization to assume that just because somebody has the money for something, that they will necessarily use it. It's possible that he hasn't converted all of his systems to LED lighting because it IS indeed a new technology, and nobody can really say what is going to be going on with the fixtures as they age (where as MH is tried and true at this point.) Also, it's pretty fathomable that he has a lot of duplicate corals in his tanks, so he could be looking at the growth rate as well.

There may be a possibility that LED is missing some spectrum like the T5 which may result in color morph of corals if they have been growing under MH. I am running experiments to supplement the missing spectrum currently and hoepfully I have some news for everybody.

The same statement is true for switching different MH bulb from brand to brand or from color to color, corals morph their colors accordingly.

I have been keeping LPS corals and some SPS under LEDs for over two years.
There are too many advantages of using LEDs that I avoid discussing them as they may be interpreted as my sale tune. LOL
