Do sellers/vendors realize that the PayPal fees are their responsibility not the responsibility of the buyer. That's like going to McDonald's and being asked to pay an extra 3% for your big mac because you used your card. I have been using PayPal for a long time as both buyer and seller. This is the only hobby where sellers ask for the fees 99% of the time.

I know that you can send it as a gift but if there is an issue with your product you can't put a claim in with PayPal. It is just weird to me how it is so excepted in this hobby.

A lot of people as for the fee, not just in this hobby. I think this goes against the PayPal terms of service. (It certainly goes against the merchant account terms of service when people ask you to pay extra to pay by Credit Card!)

Yeah I deal with buying/selling reptiles and maybe 30% of sellers ask for it but in this hobby its EVERYONE... it is against PayPal TOS to ask for it but no one here seems to realize that lol...

I never had a problem sending as a gift but I guess I put too much trust in people. This is supposed to be a tight nit community of people helping each other out. If someones going to take atvantage of that fact and try to rip me off, they are going to have a bigger problem then just returning my money! JMHO

:scratchch I have heard MANY times, that unless your purchase is from EBay...Paypal will do NOTHING to protect any 'outside' transactions....If the seller can prove he mailed ANYTHING (even an empty box), he gets the $$$$

It is also against most TOS to have a minimum purchase in order to use a credit card. In fact, in some States/Cities it is illegal. But it does cost a store every time a credit card is swiped, so I dont fight this unless they were obnoxious or something...

I use my PayPal with my credit card so if PayPal wont fight then the credit card will.. but if its sent as a gift you are screwed

I agree, that's how it is, been there. Paypal customer service's people are the biggest morons I've ever spoke too, believe me. Here we have our own circle of trust :grouphug: and even if someone is a dirtbag you can call him/her out and give him/her a bad feedback. I do the same to be honest with you- if you can trust me, either cover the paypal fee or stop by and bring cash:) I bought many frags, always used gift option when paypaled someone and never had problems. However, there is feedback system here and moderators advice everyone to check it before you buy it.

All that does not take away from the fact that people that sell things should not ask for this fee... If the seller doesn't like the fee then PayPal isn't for them they shouldn't put the fee one the buyer.

I know we have feedback and that we are all friends here. But if you are special enough a friend to ask for the fee as a seller then I should be special enough to say no as a buyer...

Vendors that are businesses in the terms of establishing a business license can only get away with asking for PP fees in a small enclosed community such as a forum. If they were selling to the general public on the internet, they would get laughed at.
As mentioned before, purchasing via mail order requires electronic types of payment and it's like Marine Depot asking for 2 or 3% additional if you use a credit card.

I've had a vendor ask for the 3% and then require the transaction conducted as a "personal other", nice..................................

I dont agree 100% here. If someone is doing a personal transaction and wants to give the buyer the option of using PayPal, it is up to the buyer to accept or not. Cash is king, but sometimes you may only have a credit card. PayPal is really the only way of using a credit card to pay for a personal transaction.

In the case of buying from an individual on the forum it should be cash because you are going to be seeing the person. If the buyer wants the convinience of paying via PayPal I dont have a problem with they eating the fee.

I only have a problem with someone that is in this as a business asking for the fee.

but if you look frome other side, a lot of this people saling you stuf for 50% off or more and you want them to pay that 3% pay pal fee as well?

Price of the item(s) has no bearing on which direction the 3% should go; it's the merchant's responsibility. Should the shops at Woodbury Commons tell you to pay their Amex fee because they're selling you that leather jacket for below their retail stores?

I've bought this issue up before and was ignored. There are vendors/sellers here that charge the 3% like it's their privilege and right. However, if their local retail store did it to them, they'll be up in arms! :lol2:

I understand but I will give you an example.

I posted a wanted ad for some high end zoas. I was contacted by a seller that stated he had what I wanted and that he would be able to deliver them for a certain price. He was very friendly and has very positive feedback. His terms were that I needed to paypal him half and then give him the other half in cash when he delivered. I understood all of that since there are a lot of flackers out there but when I asked for his email he requested the 4% fee. My feedback is good also. Why should I pay the additional 4%? Why should I send it as a gift? We are both active members on this site and if I can trust him enough to send it as a gift then he should trust me enough to let me give him the entire amount in cash when he delivers.

I have explained all this to him via PM and im waiting for a response. I have nothing against him since he seems like a very nice person. I am just stating that it seems like a ok thing to just ask for the fee when it really isnt.... I hope we can still come to an agreement but I will not going to paypal him as a gift or pay the fee... Its just not right...

I agree here, the problem is would you rather have an option to eat the fee or bring cash or to have the fee already included in the goods you are buying?

That's a good example. I think the right is on your side, if he's willing to deliver it to you and you paypal him half the money, he's in much better position than you are so he shouldn't ask you for additional 4%. A better solution here would be if he requested certain amount of money to cover his gas surcharge and you both agree that if you won't show up he takes the downpayment.
