But guys,
A few token samples mean little either way.
The fish were from Buhol and there was nothing changed from the pre-MAC days there.
Really, nothing at all.

(albeit I don't think I've ever heard of a DOA or DAA clownfish).

Your a retailer and you've never heard of a wild clownfish dying in a retail store from Brooklynella? 8O

How bout those cetified tomato clowns last year, those things could walk on water, woops, I mean float on water

Man, I've seen hundreds of dead clowns, and that was prior to me enterring wholesale. We got in several near total loss batches from ORA back in the day. I'm sure they've corrected any problem we/they were having though as Petco doesn't tolerate DOA/DAA

Ever get any extra large saddle backs Rikko? Wiat.. Are you importing, buying from a local wholesaler, or from LA?

Back in the day I got in a couple large DOA/DAA ORA orders. Maybe they put a little too much "Q" in the shipping water.

ime-75% or better of all wild caught clown shipments have individuals w/brooklynella

at least 5% of 'tank raised' clowns are total doa/daa-weak runts, shipping shock, brook., etc

I recently had a whole shipment of one specie die from farm raised clowns. I had other species in the same shipment, all placed into the same system (different tanks) and they did and are doing fine.

Wild clowns are a hit and miss, especially in the summer months - Brooklynella is awful. It also sucks to have healthy clowns (TR or WC) and get a bad Royal Gramma or two with Brook.... ugh.

... Lettuce, cheese, pickles, onions on a sesame seed bun....

Cleaning up clowns....
and preventing the ammonia burn
[ from prolonged storage in warm ammonia water ] that leads to the slime neucrosis...
that leads to brooklynella ...
that leads to the death of hearty fish is the work of seasoned fish handlers of experience...not bookkeepers.

There is little left to understand about why clowns break down....predictably. It is a known syndrome whats happening.
There is nothing left but field education to convert the handlers to better handling procedure.
And that....is a solution thats never in the cards.
Maroons and tomatos live in bags now...day after day...til they come in from the field.
Ocellaris live in gang-bags and are shipped...overcrowded by the thousands on ferry boats...from far away rubbing and abrasing each other and sanding off their "protective" mucous envelop.. .Then...the ammonia from waste and metabolic processes find easy pathways into the raw tissues and its a wonder any make it thru at all.
Secondary infection..ie brook, is but an aftermath and the 'coup de grace' of the previous series of assaults on the clowns.
Its a proven recipe for ruining them en huge numbers and one that is followed religiously in most field stations.
It can be fixed...but fixing it cannot be faked.
Steve
PS...
And Jenn, the grammas packed in 98 degree heat in Haiti on Friday , spend the weekend in Miami or thereabouts...[ 94 degrees ] in the same bag...and may finally get unpacked Monday or Tuesday in the wholesalers tanks.
The tissue breakdown from this bag storage is similar to that of the clowns...but the gill damage is more the result then brooklynella....as grammas have normal scale protection instead of the slime coat.

We comment alot that we hate fish too... why can't people just have coral tanks and skip the whole fish thing?

Actually love fish.. have fish in the shop that are 7+ years with us.. but *selling* fish is what I often lose sleep over.

Orchids my friends.. that's the future!
