None of that's remotely like the situation you described (one or two tanks used to whitewash thousands). Frankly, it looks like they're moving thousands of animals through their facilities.

Charles this from the bottom link you provided: Choose from our modest in-store selection, or special order your next showcase beauty from LiveAquaria.com's worldwide selection of aquatic life shipped directly to your door. "

This is so misleading it even has you fooled. :P O2O is the one moving 1000s of animals. Race is just getting a cut.

Chip,

I just thought i would chime in and give you some food for thought.
Fir starters I am a mortgage broker in the Daytona Beach Area, and have been for 4 years. I have seen the real estate market go from a booming market to what it currently is now, which is the complete opposite.

I could be wrong, but I would assume your other property in New york is in a similiar market area as ours. Houses are not selling at the same rate they did a year ago. Builders are offering huge discounts in an attempt to decrease their inventory. The homes on the market sit there for long periods of time.

I think your business idea is a good one, but it is being started for the wrong reasons. If you were not in a situation where you needed an immediate profit i would say go for it. To generate a profit takes time, and what if something happens and you loose everything you invested in your garage? Would you have the funds to start over again?

I can really relate to your situation because my wife does not work, and I dont get paid until a loan closes. Perhaps you can look at cutting back somewhere in the household expenses. Or perhaps having a garage sale to generate some quicker cash flow for the household.

Dont forget about the idea of starting the business, just put it on hold until things get back to normal in the house hold.

If you would like any other ideas PM me and we can talk.

Good luck with the garage sale

Now that's a statement I can get behind Mitch. Race did come here and disclose that practice, with a bunch of help from RDO'ers :D

They ship their Divers Den and cultured corals from that facility.

Norm,
You referencing an etailer who never even tanks the animals. They must surely be parroting the information.

Now THAT'S reaching. You really think Ken Wong has no first hand experience keeping saltwater fish?

But hey, even if he didn't, and for some reason no one on his staff did either, does that even matter if the information is accurate, reliable, conscientious and realistic?

The times, they aren't a' changing. They've already changed.

heh mitch is fairly ignorant of everything marine depot-even what isn't tanked at mdl, is tanked SOMEWHERE - for the most part on a 104th establishment or three.(which also allow cherry picking :P )

after being canned from there, i can tell y'all that it's more than likley that the folk who wrote that mandarin blurb are prob'ly not working there any longer, either, -afaik, everyone who was more or less running/managing mdl has either left at one point, or got fired

In all fairness to Race I think their coral facility looks nice. Kevin Kohen is doing a good job. Quite frankly the prices on their Divers Den fish are not give away, so retailers don't have much to ***** about what they are doing up in Wisconsin. So enough with the etail bashing.

There is a "circle of life" in this hobby. (to use a phrase.......)
In order to pull your weight in this hobby , one must keep the circle turning.
Operating a brick and mortar fish store is perhaps the single biggest way one can pull their weight .
But even basement operations can as well,
Produce your own product, like Kent Marine in the early days.
Grow a product like ORA.
or even start a chat forum like Reefs org
Yes , it might be a little confusing as to where the boundaries lay and where the differences of what constitutes carrying ones weight.
But most should agree that a basement estore selling coral cheaper due to lower overhead, does little to keep the circle of life turning.
Some questions are a bit complex,
Like:
*)Should brick and mortars only sell local?
*)Should brick and mortars only sell to customers they created?

Well, perhaps some in our ranks are purists and feel that retail stores should only sell to customers they created.

But for the vast bunch of us , that would be a little silly.

The big box stores are most likely responsible for getting the single largest percentage of hobbyists interested in aquariums ( with their advertising might and in your face (as your buying dog food) evry town presences........
Does this translate into me or Jenn turning away customers who started out fish keeping at the Big Box stores?( not hardly)

If national brick and mortar fish stores dont reclaim their customers, the drop shippers will continue to reshape the market for you.
Either the local fish stores around this nation get on this Internet thing,
Or their going to go a slow death the same way as the Mom and pop hardware stores.

By the way , my shopping cart will ask questions.... and so much more.

I thought that would make Jenn happy?

Chip, don't do it.

Taking a loan or using high interest credit cards to start a small business that might or might not succeed when you are also starting out new in a business that may not be in an upswing is just too much risk.

To make 200 a week you would be much better off getting a waiter job at a nice joint where you can make some tips and just work nights and weekends.

Before you say whaaaaa?

You can make that much easily working 2 days in a place like Applebees or Red lobster and you have to put exactly 0 money into it.

Since its only a temporary fix until your other house sells its really the quickest way to make ends meet.

Do NOT take credit and pay your other loan off, that just sinks you in deeper.

Good luck buddy.

Sorry but being a Real Estate agent moonlighting at the local red lobster is career suicide.

The GF can do it though.
