Are you guys that serious about B&M responsibilities and etailer "doing their part for the hobby"? ? ?
I would imagine 60% or more of sales go to new customers getting into the hobby, then getting back out when fish die or they get tired of it.
I would then assume that these etailers or B&M's wouldn't care and just want their money. And if its in their business plan to turn these customers away because they aren't serious about the hobby like you, and if they were it would be financial suicide.
Not saying that having a business run that way would be, just that you can't expect them ALL to be that way. And the extreme minority that are run that way are usually supported by DIE-HARDS like you guys. The rest are there for the rest of the "regular world" and its customers.
In the END these are businesses established to make a profit. If they aren't - its called a HOBBY.
My personal experience is be as responsible as you can without letting things get out of hand and almost neurotic - which seems to be the thread here. JMHO.
Back yard shop, big etailer, or huge retailer like Wal-Mart - there are only so many parameters you can control.
Pushing ethics on others will never work, controlling your own can.
This is just my own take - from an outsider - take it for what its worth.
