I agree.. haiti fish are some of the worst in the trade bar none. Just goes to show you how important handling is. Isn't it awesome how they put 6 jawfish in those little PVC tubes and put net on both ends and just leave them in there together for who knows how long?

Your fact finding mission is based on a rumor? You know how many trade rumors I hear? You know how many are actually true? Very very little of them are Mitch. Gresham it is either true or it is not. It is not character assasination like you would expect with "rumors". Sometimes facts get leaked out prior to the official notification. (Ever hear of Watergate?) This leak actually came from a pretty reliable source and the fact Bob has not stepped forward to answer the question speaks volumes. If I didn't believe it was most likely true, then I wouldn't have wasted time asking the question. This (if true) is something that will have consequences to our industry and could be just the beginning of tightening regulation. The quicker you learn of this stuff the quicker you can adjust accordingly. So let Bob or someone in the know answer the question if you don't mind.

If it gets answered here a lot of people get the benefit of learning the answer. Also someone other than Bob has the opportunity to respond if they know the answer and are willing to share. Also someone who heard the leak first hand asked me to post it here. I didn't realize seeking knowledge would upset so many people. :roll:

From what I was told as of two weeks ago all Rock/ricordea is done. There was no way to prove the rock was aquacultured, so they threatened to shut down the total export but just ended up shutting down the rock and subsequently ricordea.
sorry for the non answer I was in Central America on a Ricordea finding mission. And yes I have found the mother of all Ricordia. Haiti is indeed a mess. For the first time riots reached to the top of the hill in Port au Prince. 22 gas stations were burned out ( something we should do in this country) And yes rock was closed by the Minister of agriculture. One week later he lost his job and his car was burned in the riots. ( angry rock collectors?) So we get a new Minister that will work with us. So SWsaltwater jump up and clap your hands, celebrate that someone in Haiti just lost a job that paid $200 a week and the chance to feed his family. And you can rejoice in the fact that some people at the box company were laid off that sell's me boxes. And since I am the only north bound freight out of Haiti most times you can sleep more soundly that maybe someone at the airport was laid off. I know the packers at $10.00 ( 3 times the average wage) a pack will get less. So cut the kids down to one meal a day and buy them dirt cookies( google it) Yea lets cut the million bucks a year I send. Shut it all down. Let them starve. I wont starve( heck I could live off the FAT for another year) But you seem to enjoy the suffering of others.
Oh by the way where I was I met 2 of the nicest little girls 6 and 8 years old. reminded me of my own kids. The guy who I was working with told me the story that there father had walked out on the mother and 12 kids
all girls. ( looks like he should have split after the first one) I asked what does the mother do? In a country where the min wage is $80 a month? Oh she works for a bakery that sometimes pays her. Then he told me that the kids faint from hunger at school. He try's to cook for them extra food when he eats and they were sharing lunch with us. they seemed to show up around lunch a lot. Suddenly I was just not so hungry. real tear jerker huh all 100% true So SWsaltwater actions have reactions. .....oh could your pet store survive without coral? all over the US Fish and wildlife has stepped up enforcement of imports. I have had some tell me that it is going to become impossible to import soon. By the way i will fly the first box of rock from Haiti to a pet store near you and give it to them when Haiti is reopened and it will be.
now back to the 12 little girls. What would you do. walk away? finish lunch? say its someone else's problem? close down the fishing biz in that country? or make a micro loan to the mother for the rent on a stall then make a deal with the fish guy that has a friend in the imported shoe business to stock the stall on credit? or go to the local version of Cosco and buy $400 worth of food? I bet you would just go to lunch. Well back to the real world and to the 95% of fokes who are nice here see you around

Here's a novel idea. Rather than going tear-jerker and talking about how much money you fund poor haitians (which is a good thing) maybe you should work on improving what is legendary for crappy quality. Instead of bragging that your fish are the cheapest (which you have done many times) make them 50 cents more and put the money into improving the system.

here is a better idea post on things that you know what you are talking about. you just decided that I have not spent thousands on up grading My shipper in Haiti. Am I responsible for the other shippers in Haiti? The ones that don't buy oil less compressors for the divers? the ones that pack off the beach? You and some others have lumped all Haiti fish together. That's a fish bigot. like all PI fish are drugged. To assume that a group of people or things all share the same faults do the fact that they have the same national origin or skin color or that all fish from Haiti are equal because they are from Haiti shows a lack of knowledge of life and the fish business.

Actually bob, the only place I ever saw 6 jawfish in a plastic tube in a bag in a box I opened in my store was from you. While I also saw them like that in wholesalers tanks in florida, you did indeed ship them to me like that. I"ve bought from all sorts of places in florida including you, and there has been a definite decline in the quality of the fish over the last decade.
I'm not saying that you haven't invested any money at all.. I'm saying there is room for improvement. You get singled out for the same reason Race does.. you are always tooting your own horn and making everyone else out to be either jealous of you, or bad or that they don't know anything.
