I don't know too much about them either, but I got a beautiful yellow and black striped one in a batch of Florida aquacultured live rock from Tampa Bay Saltwater. The marine depot photograph does not do them justice. There are better photos here and here

How about adapting a multi-stage reverse osmosis unit with some extra prefiltering to keep it from continuously clogging?

My LFS sells rock which is most decidedly dead. They claim it is live however, and charge $7.00/lb. Try Tampa Bay Saltwater although the cost of shipping might not be worth it.
