How about a cheapo pH meter that is in the form factor of a pencil? Most people in hydroponics use these. Not accurate, but should be better than colorimetric based test if you have issue telling the difference between pink/blue/purple.

What's wrong with your current one? Can't tell the color? I use pH meter, and last time I use it was about two years ago. Not a very exciting parameter to monitor.

Depends on the type of sand used, you can minimize the "kidnapping" of the sand mentioned above. Beside, you can have the skimmer processed water (de-bubbled) past thru the flu. filter. But, yes, that's a very good point.

IME, bleaching of the coralline is due to salinity shock and light shock. It usually takes several days for the bleaching to be visible, since the color that responsible for the coraline algae does not "fade" instantly. If the condition of the tank is good, there is nothing to worry about...
