Good idea for an article. First time I tried using plain spar varnish. Worked ok except for 1 or 2 patches that were damaged by salt. If I were doing again I would use epoxy. I hope your research gives other options as well.
Nori should work. You can find it at an oriental grocery. Cut into strips 1/4 inch wide and about 2 inches long and put it on a lettuce clip or even rubberband to a piece of rubble.

I just built a small refugium and reinforced the corners and bottom with right-angle plastic corner protectors. I found it in the wallpaper section of the hardware store. A 4-foot length cost me $3 and change.
